Percy the Park Keeper

This term we are looking at parks and our local environment. So far we have talked about all the different parks we have visited, what we can see and do there and what animals might live in the park. This will help us when we come to designing and making our own mini parks!

We have also been reading Percy the Park Keeper stories and have created our very own Percy Hut! However, silly Mrs Hamilton forgot to leave mugs and a kettle in the hut! Apparently Percy and the park animals need their hot cocoa!

Pupil watching from Percy’s Hut! Great practise for the bird hunt next week.
Writing thank you letters to Percy on behalf of the animals in the park.
Cheerio bird feeders.
Using the rainbow and blocks to create different structures.
What concentration! Beading and decorating our branch sculpture! 🎨
Working together to measure and pour sand into the different containers.

Writing

We are always on the go in 1.4. Even during early entry, 1.4 are wide awake, busy writing words we already know, tricky words and attempting to write new words to make our sentences more exciting! Watch this space!

Chinese New Year

Mrs Geary  ( aka Robert’s mum) came in to visit us this morning.   She told us all about Chinese New Year.  It was amazing.  She taught us how to write “Happy New Year” in Mandarin  and we all got to try the chopsticks.  They were great fun! ( we loved them so much that we are using them to pick up the water beads in the tuff tray)

Mrs Geary told us all about why there are animals for every year.  We are mostly snakes and dragons in 1.4.    Mrs Hamilton knew her entire family!

Mrs Geary has given us all red envelopes and chopsticks to take home.  That was very kind of her.   We have learned so much today.  Thank you, Mrs Geary.

Gymnastics

We have moved on from doing our balances and rolls.  We were really good at them, so we have moved on to cartwheels.  Some people are really good at them and are trying round offs ( in Primary 1!!)  and some people are trying to lift their hips by bouncing across the bench and the mat.  It is quite tricky, but we will keep trying.

Responding to children’s needs

We are constantly listening to the children and seeing how they learn best.  If it means we have to change the room, then we do it. The children especially work well with imaginative play and construction.  We used the water beads to learn about volume  and we have learned about questionnaires and tally marks and we have been practising our number stories.

We have created a living room  with a sofa and books to read and a cafe area – the play doh cakes are delicious!! 😁

Rescuing the frozen dinosaurs!

The dinosaurs were trapped in ice castles and we had to think carefully about how to release them.  We suggested that we could, hold it, blow on it, put it in warm water, put salt on it and move it around.  The warm water worked best.  We then poured on a little salt and too much salt.  Too much salt makes the ice become colder.

We then discussed how we have used our science know.edge at home. Some children had salted their path.  Some children had shuffled in the snow, creating  energy and melting the snow.
