We are always busy in 1.4. Even if we are not working with a teacher, we always have something to do, as we learn through play. The teachers still watch what is going on and still interact with all the children. It is often lovely to watch the children and we learn from them too.
We tested different materials to see which would be the best to keep us warm. We used warm and cold water in vials and different materials to wrap them up in. We tested them for heat with the thermochromic paper. If it went blue, it was too cold. It it turned red or orange it was warm. We then held the paper to see if we were warm or cold. Some people had cold “blue” noses!
Our Mystery Reader was Mrs Grey, who is one of our lovely Child Development Officers. She read “The Super Smile Shop” by Joe Cowley. It was really good.
How do you keep a snowman from melting? Which materials work best? We watched Olaf sing his song from “Frozen” and decided why he couldn’t survive summer. We then tested different materials and decided that the tinfoil worked best. We then looked at the properties of salt and its effect on ice. Too little and it melts ( great for paths on icy days) but too much salt makes the ice grow colder and we were able to stick two ice cubes together! Amazing!
This weeks Mystery Reader was our Base 2 Depute Head Teacher, Mrs Noble. She just loves reading books. She read “A Squash and a Squeeze” by Julia Donaldson. We all joined in and enjoyed it.
We had a surprise reader in class today. Mrs Shaw , our Director of Education came to visit us. She read “ Stick Man” by Julia Donaldson . She asked us questions and was impressed with our answers.
We looked at telling rhymes through using puppets. We had little squeaky voices, high pitched voices, gruff voices and big, deep voices. It was a lot of fun. We made sock puppets and designed puppets. We put on performances in the Puppet Theatre, practised our voices with the use of Buster ( our class Puppet) and we thoroughly enjoyed watching the Puppet scene, ” The Lonely Goat Herd ” from ” The Sound of Music” . Yodel- ay – ee!!
We started our new science topic today, looking at a burning question for all 5 year olds- Which materials make good bubble blowers? We looked at cardboard, metal , cloth and plastic . We decided that plastic was the best and cardboard turned soggy, so wasn’t so good.
We looked at 2D Shape last week and now it’s the turn of 3D shapes. It was a bit more tricky. We have looked at lots of different real life 3D shapes and played lots of games. We also had fun building with our 3D shapes.
