Percy The Park Keeper

We are looking at growing seeds and parts of flowers in science now.  Today, we started by looking at Percy The Park Keeper and all the work he has to do to look after the park.  We will be looking after our school Eco Garden and planting in class.   We now have Percy’s hut in class. We can pretend to be Percy and cook in his little hut; take notes and use the binoculars to look for birds in the playground.

Investigating Dinosaurs and Fossils

Our class has changed again, as the children wanted to learn about dinosaurs, then the conversation turned to fossils.  There are dinosaurs to play with; bones to discover; fossils to make and curiosity to be satisfied.  The conversations which have been sparked have been amazing.

Snow Days

Well!  Throughout my entire career, I have never had a snow day until now!   I decided to prepare for some topical science lessons for next week and have got some snow bricks ready and sitting in my freezer.  We will look at the properties of snow. ( How can snow be “ the wrong type of snow”?   I left outside a container to see what happened to different items in freezing conditions, but I can’t find it now as it has been buried under the snow!  The ice castles are also in the freezer ready to discover how to rescue the items inside them.

Ther are lots of things you can do at home too- write stories about the snow and their adventures in the snow; draw pictures about the snow; build snowmen and discover what happens in powder snow; go on Sumdog and Education City. ( Sumdog diaries are in the front of the Diary); read stories with an adult; take photos of the snow and best of all….. have fun in the snow!

Remember to wear snow boots / wellies when we return and for the children to have gloves, hats and scarves on as we will go outside for some outdoor learning in the snow.   We will change into our gym shoes in class and let our wet things dry.

I look forward to seeing your stories and pictures.

Learning Through Play

We learn in many different ways in 1.3.   We have child led activities, where we choose how we learn; ; teacher led activities , where Mrs Arbuckle sets things up for us to learn and child initiated activities , where we ask Mrs Arbuckle what we would like to learn  and she does her best to research and find resources for us to learn.

The Castle

The children asked for a castle in the classroom, so this week it is slowly coming together.  There have been cries of “Fi, fi, foe, fum!” and lots of role play.  Today we looked at flags and their importance and linked them to the Winter Olympics.  We then designed our own flags for the castle.  It is a work in progress. We’ll keep you informed. 😁

Jack and The Beanstalk

The children had decided that they wanted to learn about fairytales and they wanted to make a castle in class.  We watched the story about “Jack and The Beanstalk”  and talked about the story.  We then printed with paint on paper to create the “brick” effect for our castle. We looked at the design of castles and drew pictures of them them and we built castles using the Lego and the blocks.  We will be planting our own beans in science after Easter.  Mrs Arbuckle loved the comment, “Well,  this is fun!”  Children should enjoy their learning.
