Learning Through Play

We learn in many different ways in 1.3.   We have child led activities, where we choose how we learn; ; teacher led activities , where Mrs Arbuckle sets things up for us to learn and child initiated activities , where we ask Mrs Arbuckle what we would like to learn  and she does her best to research and find resources for us to learn.

Directions

Some of us were learning about directions today in maths.  We pretended to be computers that had to be programmed to move correctly.  If you give the wrong information ( directions) , then the computer won’t do what you want it to do.

We then looked at ” Hour of Code”, which is a beginners computer programming site.  We had to give directions (commands)  for BB-8 to move around.  We loved it.

The Castle

The children asked for a castle in the classroom, so this week it is slowly coming together.  There have been cries of “Fi, fi, foe, fum!” and lots of role play.  Today we looked at flags and their importance and linked them to the Winter Olympics.  We then designed our own flags for the castle.  It is a work in progress. We’ll keep you informed. 😁

Jack and The Beanstalk

The children had decided that they wanted to learn about fairytales and they wanted to make a castle in class.  We watched the story about “Jack and The Beanstalk”  and talked about the story.  We then printed with paint on paper to create the “brick” effect for our castle. We looked at the design of castles and drew pictures of them them and we built castles using the Lego and the blocks.  We will be planting our own beans in science after Easter.  Mrs Arbuckle loved the comment, “Well,  this is fun!”  Children should enjoy their learning.

Busy First Day

It was a busy first day.  It was important to keep the children in their normal routine to ensure a seamless transition.  Some children were adding in maths; some were discovering all about right angles and some were learning about volume using the water beads.   We read our new reading books and asked lots of questions.  We also learn continuously through play.

Hello!

Mrs Arbuckle, Class Teacher.

Hello! It’s lovely to meet you! I’m Mrs Arbuckle and I will be with P1.3 til the summer.  I have been working in P1.4 , so I am very familiar with how P1 works.  Primary One at Mearns is a team effort with all the staff. I am also a very experienced teacher ( I have a lot of experience in P1 and I also taught the dinosaurs!!) I have taught in many different schools.  This is my fifth year at Mearns. I am looking forward to working with the children in P1.3.

I enjoy using the class blog to share with you what goes on in class and you can see what and how your child learns.  ( Ask them at home, and they usually say “Nothing!”)

I hope you enjoy our blog.
