Deaf Children and Young People during Covid-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>The Impact of Masks<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Although masks are necessary for protection against the virus, it is important to note the effect that it is having on children and young people with hearing impairments so that adjustments can be made to best support them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndcs.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The National Children&#8217;s Deaf Society<\/a> have gathered information for children and young people, parents and professionals to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndcs.org.uk\/covid-19-coronavirus-support-for-deaf-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">support children with hearing impairments at this time.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>They have also ran a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndcs.org.uk\/blog\/survey-results-face-masks-deaf-children-young-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> survey<\/a> over the summer to gather the experiences of children and young people with hearing impairments experience of masks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Face masks are causing huge barriers to communication<\/li>\n<li>Masks are also having a negative impact on your child\u2019s confidence and independence<\/li>\n<li>Two thirds of parents said that their child finds it hard to communicate with someone who is wearing a mask<\/li>\n<li>Nine out of ten parents confirmed that clear masks can make a huge difference for their deaf child<\/li>\n<li>90% of families would be much more likely to visit a particular place if staff were deaf aware.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In response to this survey, The National Children&#8217;s Deaf Society have written this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndcs.org.uk\/media\/6165\/briefing-on-face-masks-and-coverings-current.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">briefing<\/a> on recommendations the use of masks in public and education settings.<\/p>\n<p>They have also gathered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndcs.org.uk\/blog\/clear-face-masks-and-face-coverings-where-to-buy-and-what-to-look-for\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">information on clear masks and face coverings.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Click <a
