Learning in the woods today

On this sunny day, we took advantage of the shade that the woods provide and we played out there for nearly an hour this morning.

We used “tapping sticks” to count up and backwards as well as starting with different numbers.  We used them to count the syllables in our names.

Then we counted and collected 10 sticks each.  We had to measure them against our arms to make sure that they were no longer than the space between our fingertips to our elbows.  Then we created pictures with them.

We also had a number hunt and created our own number line.  In between all that, we climbed some trees and trekked around the pitch.

Have a look.

Mearns Masters – Designers Scarecrows

Following a discussion in the garden last week about protecting our daffodils and seeds, the children suggested making scarecrows to “keep the crows away.”

We used recycled materials that we had investigated last week to see which were waterproof.  The materials that were best for the little buddy’s roof were plastic bags, plastic and tinfoil so we decided to use them.

We also used natural materials like sticks and cones that we had collected in the woods.

Check out our scarecrows!

Last week, on one of our frosty days some of us took a wander outside.  When we walked on the grass we discovered that the grass was “crunchy” due to the frost.  The frost on the outdoor equipment was funny to touch and we squished it with our fingers.

As we entered the woods there wasn’t as much ice. We listened to the story of the Three Little Pigs.  We chatted about what materials they used to build their houses and looked around the woods to see what we could use to make little dens for tiny little creatures.

the leaves were “were too soggy”

the sticks “might break”

Counting in the Woods

Yesterday we hiked over to the woods at the side of the pitch.  On our way to the woods we talked about the story “Going on a Bear Hunt.”  We didn’t find any this time.

While we were in the woods we counted leaves on little branches and we also made wands.  We found sticks, counted 10 leaves and added them to our magic stick wands.

Before we left the woods we sang some songs including “Rain, rain go away” as the rain had started to fall.
