Monday fun!

Today we visited our school library. Before going up, we reminded ourselves of the rules in a library and tried our best to follow these when there. We had the opportunity to choose our own book and then Mrs Stephenson read us a story. We identified rhyming words in the story and we were also introduced to the words ‘fiction’ and ‘non-fiction’ when discussing different books. This is something we will be thinking about more during term 3.

This afternoon we signed up to our IPlay rooms. We cannot wait to visit another primary 1 classroom tomorrow and have been enjoying having the opportunity to play with children from other classes too 🙂

‘I’m not a stick, why can’t they see?’

For story writing this week we took our learning outdoors. We trekked to the wooded area by the pitches to find a cosy spot to listen to a story. Unfortunately Mrs Stephenson didn’t anticipate how muddy it would be! Thankfully Ollie had the great idea that we should travel along the fence. This was lots of fun!

Once we found a place to set out our covers, we sat and listened to the story ‘Stickman’.

After the story, we adventured some more and tried to find the perfect stick. We then chatted with our friends and used our imaginations to pretend the sticks were different objects.

We returned to class and wrote some fabulous stories! Our sticks were lightsabers, pens, swords and there were even some magic wands!

In the coming weeks we will be exploring the outdoors more as part of our story writing. This will take place every Tuesday so please pop our wellie boots on us just in case!

Weather watching 👀

Today we looked at the weather forecast and observed the weather throughout the day.

We have seen heavy rain showers, sunshine, rainbows and windy spells all over the course of a few hours. How lucky are we?

As our independent craft, we created wind measures. We loved taking these outside and watching them dance in the wind!

For Literacy today we wrote a story about a Windy Day, considering what we might do or what we might see. Here is an example of one of our fantastic stories.

Busy bees!

Literacy

Today our red task was to build sentences. Mrs Stephenson wrote sentences on the board and we had to find the words and order them correctly. We were super! We were then responsible for having our efforts photographed as evidence. 🎯

Mearns Masters

Today we started Coders, our 3rd Mearns Masters pathway. We were focusing on inputting instructions into both the Bee-Bot & Code-a-pillar apps to make them move to a desired spot. We demonstrated excellent teamwork and are very excited to be trying out the actual Bee-bots next week!

Potion Making!

We had lots of fun making potions this week. As part of this challenge, we had to choose which objects we wanted to include in our potion, share our choices with our teacher to be recorded on our ingredients list and measure out quantities of ‘magic powder’ and ‘special brew’.

We loved watching the potions bubble and fizz when everything was mixed together and got very excited when some overflowed and had to be quickly taken to the sink! We observed that the more magic powder (bicarbonate soda) and ‘special brew’ (vinegar) we added, the more likely the potion was to overflow.

Chalktastic!

The pitch is currently closed whilst work is being completed so today we were unable to get onto it for Outdoor P.E. Instead, before heading for our P.E lesson in the street area we went to our playground. We had the opportunity to play in our outdoor roleplay area with friends or we could use the chalk to draw pictures beginning with the sounds the teacher called out. It got a little messy but we loved it!

Monday 29th August

Today in 1.4 we learned the sound ‘i’. We practised forming the letter correctly and had the opportunity to make insects. We also tried blending the sounds we have learned so far to read words such as ‘sat’, ‘it’ and ‘sit’. Mrs Stephenson was very impressed with our efforts!

During Maths times, we have been focusing on forming the numbers 1-10 correctly. To do this we have been using our SmartBoard, whiteboard & pens and play dough. Today we also went outside and used chalk to form the numbers 1-6 and could make these as big or as little as we liked. Some of us made number 1s the length of the P1 playground, they were huge!

This afternoon we started our Mearns Masters Gastronomers programme in the school kitchen. We were thinking about where our food comes from and how to safely chop using the ‘claw’ and ‘bridge’ hold. Mrs Stephenson is saving pictures from this for when we have our permissions back so you can see some of our reactions to fruits we tasted. Avacado was definitely the least favourite!
