Spark Park Fundraising Event

Today was a fantastic first day back after our October break. We enjoyed lots a fun activities on the pitch and then watched M&M’s Sleeping Beauty production in the gym hall.

Mrs Stephenson was so happy with our efforts and amazing listening skills. We are definitely a class that loves pantomimes (which we demonstrated with our enthusiastic participation throughout!). Thankfully Maleficent was defeated… phew!

Pizza time!

Today we applied all of our new skills and made pizza! We spread tomato puree on Warburtons thins, grated cheese and put this over the top and had the option to chop peppers and add them too! Mrs Stephenson then popped these into the oven and while waited on them cooking we tidied up our work stations.

When we returned to the class we learned how cheese is made by watching the ‘Farm to Fork’ video. We didn’t think the curds and whey looked very nice!

Gastronomers week 4

In the kitchen today we made houmous and tomato sandwiches. To begin with, we washed our hands and got on our aprons. We then chopped up some tomatoes before spreading our houmous using a butter knife. We placed our tomatoes on and folded the bread in half.

Some of us were eager to taste test the sandwiches while others felt someone at home would like it more.

Next we tasted a chocolate mousse for our dessert. Mrs Stephenson blended avacado with cocoa powder and a little bit of syrup and water until it was nice and smooth. We then chopped some strawberries and popped these on top. It was a real mixed reaction in the class, some of us LOVED it whilst others… not so much!

Measure

Today we watched the story ‘Jojo Gnome & the Maths Challenge’. Like the characters in the story, we then took our maths learning outdoors and explored the woodland on the other side of our pitch.

We were gathering objects and comparing their sizes. We used words like; longer, shorter, taller, bigger and smaller. We were great at following instructions!

Chalktastic!

The pitch is currently closed whilst work is being completed so today we were unable to get onto it for Outdoor P.E. Instead, before heading for our P.E lesson in the street area we went to our playground. We had the opportunity to play in our outdoor roleplay area with friends or we could use the chalk to draw pictures beginning with the sounds the teacher called out. It got a little messy but we loved it!

Mearns Masters- Gastronomers

Week 1 – Fruit Salad

After talking about our favourite fruit, we explored how a variety of fruits end up in our local shops using the videos ‘Farm to Fork’ . We were then shown the two different holds for chopping. These are the ‘claw’ and the ‘bridge’.

Before having the opportunity to use a knife to try these holds, we discussed health & safety rules to ensure we kept ourselves and each other safe.

We chopped and tasted pears, blueberries, melon, strawberries and avacado. Strawberries were voted our favourite!

Week 2- Fruit Smoothies

We have been continuing to refine our chopping skills, washing and preparing fruit before our teacher added these to the blender to make some delicious smoothies.

Our first smoothie had banana, mango, pineapple and apple juice. We named it ‘Sunshine’. It was delicious!

Our second smoothie included banana, strawberry, raspberries and apple juice.  We named it ‘Rainbow’. We liked this one too!

Week 3 – Rainbow Salad

Now that we have tasted lots of fruit, we have now begun to explore vegetables. During this session we extended our skills by learning how to peel and grate a carrot safely . We made delicious salads which featured carrots, celery, tomatoes and three different colours of peppers (red, orange and green). We had the option to taste these and some of us even wanted to take ours home to share with our families. We were superstars!

Monday 29th August

Today in 1.4 we learned the sound ‘i’. We practised forming the letter correctly and had the opportunity to make insects. We also tried blending the sounds we have learned so far to read words such as ‘sat’, ‘it’ and ‘sit’. Mrs Stephenson was very impressed with our efforts!

During Maths times, we have been focusing on forming the numbers 1-10 correctly. To do this we have been using our SmartBoard, whiteboard & pens and play dough. Today we also went outside and used chalk to form the numbers 1-6 and could make these as big or as little as we liked. Some of us made number 1s the length of the P1 playground, they were huge!

This afternoon we started our Mearns Masters Gastronomers programme in the school kitchen. We were thinking about where our food comes from and how to safely chop using the ‘claw’ and ‘bridge’ hold. Mrs Stephenson is saving pictures from this for when we have our permissions back so you can see some of our reactions to fruits we tasted. Avacado was definitely the least favourite!
