Mearns Masters: Designers

This week we started our 3rd Mearns Masters pathway; Designers. We explored different materials and then settled on using clay to create our own models. Everyone came up with 3 ideas on paper.  Each pupil then chose one of their ideas to replicate with clay.  We had some great ideas from rainbows to tigers to cherries and robots! What a creative bunch. I am looking forward to seeing what fantastic product designs the class will come up with next week. Watch this space!

Gastronomers update

We have been enjoying refining our cutting skills during our Mearns Masters sessions, continuing to chop a range of fruit and veg. We also made lovely salad sandwiches with the option of adding cheese or houmous. Some of us found these tasty and some of us didn’t. Additionally, as a special treat for St Andrews Day we tried shortbread fresh out the oven 🙂 We LOVED it!

Gastronomers Week 2: Fruit Salad

We had a fantastic afternoon in the kitchen on Monday. We learned two methods to safely cut our food; the bridge hold and claw grip.

Bridge Hold

We put on our aprons and gave our hands a thorough clean. After that we collected our chopping boards, knifes and bowls for our fruit salads. Everyone was very excited to be in the kitchen but very well behaved and showed great listening skills.

We used the bridge hold to chop our strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, tangerines and the claw grip for bananas, melon and pear.

Well done P1.4 and keep practising at home!

Gastronomers Week 1: Anyone for Crudités?

Our first week in the kitchen was lots of fun! In the classroom we listened to the story ‘Green Eggs and Ham’ by Dr Seuss and discussed the benefits of trying new food.  When we arrived at the kitchen we washed our hands and then sampled a range of vegetables, recording what we liked and disliked. Mrs Stephenson was so impressed with our attitudes towards trying new things and was pleased we all had a go.

Mearns Masters: Coding

Happy Monday!

Mearns Masters

This afternoon we began our 6 week block of Mearns Masters exploring ‘Coding’. Today our focus was firstly following instructions. For this, we created paper aeroplanes! We knew if we did not do this in the correct sequence the aeroplanes would not look or function the way they should. After this, Mrs Stephenson showed us the controls on a ‘beebot’ and what to do to make it go. It was lots of fun trying these out ourselves although we are finding coding the turns a little tricky. This is something we will explore further next week 🙂 We also had the opportunity to play the ‘beebot’ game on the iPad. It was great to have an afternoon full of fun technology!

Jolly Phonics

Today we learned the new sound ‘i’. We practised forming the letter correctly, identified pictures of objects beginning with ‘i’ and were introduced to blending sounds. We now know four sounds, ‘s’, ‘a’, ‘t’ and ‘i’. This week we will also learn the sounds ‘p’ and ‘n’.

Numeracy & Maths

We are continuing to focus on practising number formation up to the number 10 this week along with challenging our counting skills. We enjoyed using the play-dough today to form different numbers.

We are hoping it won’t be much longer before photograph permissions are confirmed and we can begin sharing pictures with you all. If you haven’t already done so, please return consent forms as soon as possible.
