We have decided to turn our home corner into a Space Station or Mission Control! We came up with questions about space and what we’d like to learn about. We had a look at how Astronauts float in space and how they brush their teeth, sleep, wash their hair, be sick without making a mess, exercise and make sandwiches! We then drew designs of our own space stations and created them using our construction pieces and loose parts! They looked pretty fantastic! Mrs Donnelly was very impressed with our efforts.

Right Angle Monsters
We learned about right angles on Friday and created our own Right Angle Monsters! We went on a right angle hunt around the classroom and school to see how many we could find!
P.E: Gymnastics – Balancing
We have been working hard on our body part balances, mirroring balances with partners as well as travelling along a bench, perfecting our shapes and practising our star, tuck and pencil jumps. Exhausting. The best fun? Walking back from PE on our very skinny tightrope across the lino flooring 😀
Mearns Masters: Designers
This week we started our 3rd Mearns Masters pathway; Designers. We explored different materials and then settled on using clay to create our own models. Everyone came up with 3 ideas on paper. Each pupil then chose one of their ideas to replicate with clay. We had some great ideas from rainbows to tigers to cherries and robots! What a creative bunch. I am looking forward to seeing what fantastic product designs the class will come up with next week. Watch this space!
Artist Study: Joan Miro
We looked at the work of Spanish surrealist artist Joan Miro. We really loved his line drawings, black blobs, stars and simple colour palette 🎨 of red, blue, yellow, white and black.
Scots Language & Ceilidh dancing💃🕺🏻
In preparation for St Andrew’s Day this Tuesday, we have been learning all things Scots!
We learned some Scottish Country dancing to our new favourite album, “Noo! That’s whit I ca’ Ceilidh Volume 1,” during our P.E. Time. We learned the dance to the Grand Old Duke of York, which is very similar to Scottish Ceilidh dances. We only had two practises, but I’m sure you will agree the children did a fantastic job! They were exhausted… and so was I. 🙂
Last week we listened to the Gruffalo in Scots! We learned some new Scots words and songs. Hae a wee keek at oor movie!
Have a lovely St Andrews Day on Tuesday. If you do anything ‘Scottish’ please upload it to next week’s homework assignment.
Gastronomers Week 2: Fruit Salad
We had a fantastic afternoon in the kitchen on Monday. We learned two methods to safely cut our food; the bridge hold and claw grip.
We put on our aprons and gave our hands a thorough clean. After that we collected our chopping boards, knifes and bowls for our fruit salads. Everyone was very excited to be in the kitchen but very well behaved and showed great listening skills.
We used the bridge hold to chop our strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, tangerines and the claw grip for bananas, melon and pear.
Well done P1.4 and keep practising at home!
Halloween Potions 👻🎃✨☠️
On Friday we made real potions! We had great fun mixing the ‘magic’ ingredients and creating happy, creepy, sad, rich and love spells, to name a few.
We will document the results of our experiment next week, when the magic ingredients are revealed!
Symmetry 🦋
We have been learning about symmetry in 2D shapes, patterns and objects around us. We created our own symmetrical patterns in pairs and in groups, we created a symmetrical pumpkin! Happy Halloween. 🎃
Junk Modelling Rockets
After reading the David Walliams book, “The First Hippo on the Moon,” we have been inspired to make our very own rocket models from junk materials! Thank you for all your contributions from home.
At first we used the 3D shapes we have been learning about to create freestanding rockets.
Once we gathered enough junk materials, Mrs Hamilton gave us our design brief:
Your rocket should:
- have a pointy top
- measure over a ruler length
- be able to stand on its own. NO glue, NO sticky tape AND with nobody holding it!
Every group managed it with little to no adult help! Well done P1.4.
They had a blast! 🙂
