The children enjoyed watching various talent show performances this week. 3.9 is certainly bursting with talent and it was a real treat to watch the children dance, draw, sing and perform.
In French we were building our confidence when talking about our family with a focus on describing who we live with, our own name and our age.
The children played a matching game with a set of cards and had to identify the written French vocab to the picture of the family member.
A fantastic week in 3.9! We made the most of the dry periods and went to the forest to do some tree identification. We used tree identification guides to help us and it was a very successful activity! This type of outdoor learning experience allows us to apply our reading skills and also other Metaskills/soft skills like collaboration, cooperation, team-work, listening to others and observation.
The children were able to identify English oak, beech, goat willow, common hawthorns and wild cherry trees. We use the leaves, bark and tree shape and size to help us.
We also did some leaf printing, which at first we tried with air drying clay, but this wasn’t very successful as the hot sun dried it out very quickly. Using plasticine was much more successful as you can see below. This allowed us to see the veins in the leaves and differentiate between different types of leaves.
In numeracy we have been focussing on improving our knowledge of our times tables.
What a fantastic week in 3.9! The children loved sports day and were so pleased that the weather stayed dry.
In maths we have been learning about fractions and using bar models to identify the fraction of a quantity.
In reading we have been learning about cause and effect. We have been learning about how to identify this in a text. We created our own success criteria to help us.

In French we have been continuing to consolidate our knowledge of the months of the year and days of the week. The children completed a matching puzzle in teams.
In Art/Mearns Masters we have continued our work on sculpture by learning about Anish Kapoor. We were inspired by her reflective foil art and used what we had learned to make some of our own.
Another busy week in P3.9!
We visited the Makerspace to continue our unit of work on sculpture artists. We can’t wait to share the work we have been doing with you! The focus this week was the Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama. The children were very interested to learn more about her story as an artist and use what they had seen and heard to inspire their own work. Sculpting can help develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination in children, and I have seen a huge improvement in their skills over the weeks.
In numeracy, the children have been learning about multiplication and exploring various multiplication tables through activities and games.
In writing, we have examined direct speech and are beginning to use it in our own texts.
In reading the children learned more about inference. Inference involves using what you know and what you have learned from the text to make educated guesses. The information will not be explicit in the text.
3.9 have been enjoying getting outdoors to take part in learning around 3D sculpture. We are continuing this unit of work for the next few weeks and it will be exciting to watch the progression of their skills and understanding! We will be visiting the school Makerspace to create some of our art.
Lots of children have been bringing in books to read to the class and this is always an enjoyable experience for all.

This week in writing the learners were planning their writing piece for next week. They are focussing on characterisation and figurative language. The learners continue to blow me away with their creativity! I will share some of our stories next week on the blog.
In numeracy we have continued to learn about money and the learners are doing very well with this. With a strong focus on calculating change mentally and counting coins we have had to work on our skip counting by 2, 5, etc. This helps us add coins quickly. Using our number talks strategies we have also been building on our ability to quickly calculate the correct change.

During numeracy learning time the children are confident using the task board to self direct their learning. They access a range of tasks including a task related to the new learning that day (usually written) and other independent activities such as mental number bond practise (rapid recall), times table practise, problem solving and active partner tasks. The photos below show them working hard on their written task! We are always trying to remember writing the short date and title and underlining it.
In writing we have been continuing our work on alliteration and characterisation, which the children are thoroughly enjoying!
In numeracy and mathematics some of the learners have been working on the 4 times table and others on vertical subtraction with carrying and borrowing.

We have been so busy in P3 and the I-pad has been forgotten about so unfortunately not many pictures from us this week. Our next photographer has a lot of catching up to do!
World Thinking Day was on Thursday and many of our pupils dressed up in their Brownie costumes. Enjoy a fantastic photo of our P3.9 Brownies.
The children thoroughly enjoyed our creative writing this week. We are focussing on figurative language and characterisation. I was blown away with the fantastic descriptions created.
In numeracy the children have been identifying patterns in number and estimating, the latter of which which proved very competitive. We competed to see who could estimate the number of objects in various containers and many of us were very close to the exact number!

A very busy few weeks in 3.9. The children continue to amaze me with the work they produce and their drive to learn!
In Scots language we read a range of entertaining Scots texts and improved on our ability to decode the new words and phrases. They absolutely loved this song. Feel free to sing it at home!
In French we have been learning to say ‘I like’ and ‘I do not like’ when talking about food. The children are learning to identify a range of foods in French.
Our trip to the concert hall was excellent for many of the children this was their first time visiting this building! We enjoyed listening to the traditional music and it was very exciting going on a trip.
Our bibs from MacTaggart & Mickel have arrived. They are fabulous! The design on the back of the children’s bibs was created by Sara. I think you will agree her design is excellent and communicates our campaign well.
