Science Experiment

P7s new topic in science is dissolving and recently we have done some experimenting.

Our experiment was to see what is soluble and what is insoluble. We experimented using:

  • Rice
  • Sand
  • Flour
  • Sweetener powder
  • Salt
  • Coffee powder
  • Cold water (100m l)
  • Spoon
  • Ruler

We thought of a hypothesis and everyone agreed that the sand and rice weren’t going to dissolve. You need to add water to rice when cooking it and there’s sand at the bottom of the sea. We knew that coffee was going to dissolve because that’s how you make coffee. The rest of the solids we weren’t sure of but we found out in the experiment that sweetener dissolved, the flour didn’t and for the salt there was a variety of results.

Reading to Primary 1

dsc00651

This week on Friday we read some stories that we wrote and illustrated to the p1’s. The criteria for our books were to make them child friendly. We each got a p1 from downstairs and some people took them back up to the class and the others read to them in their classroom. I think that all of the p1’s enjoyed our stories and also our illustrations.  It took us about a week to make, illustrate and write our books. Soon we will be reading our books to the p2s and p3s and hopefully they will enjoy it as much as the p1s did.

WW11

This week we were learning about World War II and how it started. At first there was a global depression which affected Germany badly and there was little money and hardly any employment. Hitler was a German who was in the Nazi political party, he promised to make Germany great again. After becoming ruler of Germany he invaded Poland, Britain and France came to fight him as they were friends of Poland. This was the start of the world war. The year 1940 was a good year for Germany as they invaded France, Belgium, Holland, Norway and Denmark. Another important event of the war was D Day on the 6th of June 1944 and the Blitz which was a bombing of Britain and Germany for 70 whole nights!

Mitzvah Day

dsc00644

On the week beginning 28th November the entire school brought in toothbrushes, toothpastes, toys, soap and shampoo and clothes. There was a daily theme. On Monday people brought in toothbrush and toothpaste, Tuesday – stationary, Wednesday- toys, Thursday- soap and shampoo and Friday- hate, gloves and scarves.

On the Friday morning once we had finished collecting the Mitzvah day objects, Primary 7 packed them up in shoeboxes and gift bags. Most people had decorated the boxes at home using wrapping paper or paint. Refuweegee (a charity organisation) collected the donations on Monday morning. They spoke to us about their organisation explaining that their aim is to provide refugees with a welcome pack.

Remembrance Day and Poppies

dsc00623

As you may know, a couple of weeks ago was Remembrance Day. Remembrance Day, also known as Armistice Day, is a memorial day which takes place every year so that countries in the Commonwealth can remember members of the armed forces who have lost their lives serving their country.

Remembrance Day is always 11th November (11/11). It was on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

The poppy was one of the first flowers to bloom on the battlefields of Flanders during World War 1. Their bright red colour symbolised the hope of new life, and the poppy became the symbol of Remembrance Day.   The Remembrance Poppy has been used as a symbol since 1920. Today, poppies are worn on clothing in the days leading up to Remembrance Day, and poppy wreaths are placed on war memorials during the parade on Remembrance Sunday. This is why Remembrance Day is often known as Poppy Day.

In the UK, poppies can be bought from The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. The money raised goes to help veterans of the armed services.

Primary seven have made poppy pictures in art that you can see hung on the wall of one of the staircases.

Judo

              dsc00104

Every Wednesday morning, for the past three weeks, we have been going to Judo lessons with Primary 6. We have been learning lots of very sore and hard moves with a man who we call Sensei. We learned a move called “DE ASHI HARAI.” This move is when you take your opponent by the shirt, hold his hand and put your foot over their leg and then you trip them over so that they fall under you.

dsc00113

Before we started our session we always had to bow and say Ree to Sensei. As a warm up at the beginning of the class the Sensei would tell us to run on the spot, do star jumps and we would play a quick game of Monkey Tig. You play this by crawling on your knees and you have to try and catch as many people as you can.

To teach us a new move, the Sensei would chose a child from Primary 6 or 7 to help demonstrate. Usually at the end of each lesson, we play a game to test our reflexes called “Land and Sea” and in this game the Sensei will shout either land or sea. If he shouts land then we have to jump on to the mat and if we hesitate or make a wrong move then we are out. However, if he shouts sea then we have to jump off the mat onto the floor and the same rules apply.

Outdoor Learning Workshop

This week Primary 7 had an outdoor learning workshop arranged by Karen in the Nursery.
We went over to the park and an Ecologist also named Karyn put together a few environmental exercises such as: working out the age of the trees, collecting different leaves, labelling parts of a tree and using a maths experiment to measure how tall the trees were.
dsc00593-2
In Autumn all the leaves on the trees change colour because of a chemical called chlorophyll, then the leaves fall off the tree. Trees that do that are called deciduous trees. Trees that stay the same all year round are called evergreen trees.
dsc00600-2
Karyn also taught us several different types of trees such as: birch, oak, spruce, cherry blossom, silver birch and horse chestnut.
Our first activity was to gather different types of leaves. Altogether we had to gather 12 different types of leaves. Some of them were; beech, birch, holly,(do not touch holly, it’s spiky!) oak, ash, alder, horse chestnut (a conquer tree) silver birch and sycamore.
The second activity was figuring out how old the trees were. One way of figuring out the age is cutting it open and counting the rings inside of the trunk but we weren’t going to do that! So instead, we got a piece of rope which had a knot every 25 centimetres and wrapped it round a tree. Then we counted each gap in 10s and that is how old the tree is.

There were also other activities including races to label parts of a tree.
Our overall experience would be 5 stars as we thoroughly enjoyed the activities!

Rosh Hashanah Assembly

P7 had been working very hard to prepare a great Rosh Hashanah Assembly for the rest of the school. Each class participated in the assembly.
P1- sang a song about apples.
P2- recited a poem about honey.
P3- presented their beautiful pomegranate art work.
P4 – made challah but it was just too yummy not to eat so instead they showed us the cloths that they designed especially for their challah.
P5 – performed a great, entertaining water dance called Ufshaftem Mayim.
P6 – sang the akeadia song which was about Avrahams big test at Mount Moria.
P7- all wrote their own parts about different aspects of Rosh Hashanah for the assembly.
Abi, Pippa, Leah, Talia, Aisha, Hannah and Ben performed a dancing extravaganza for the song Dip Your Apple by Fountainheads.
Abi inP7 also played her guitar and sang a new Rosh Hashanah song called Shana Tova, Happy New Year (Rosh Hashanah Song for Children)
We think that we can speak for everyone when we say the assembly was a huge success.

Dojo Points

images

As you may know most classes in the school have started using dojo points. Dojo points is a reward website where each student has their own Kung Fu avatars.
You can gain Dojo points by being well behaved and doing good things! We came up with our own ways to earn points: being responsible, participating, being persistent, respectful, team work, time keeping and working to a high standard.
When we earn 150 dojo points as a class or more then we get to choose our prize such as: lunch in the park, sitting beside whomever we want, a party, etc.
If an individual person earns 15 dojo points or more, then they also get to choose from a few choices such as: sitting on a cushion, writing in pen, packing up five minutes early, etc.
Hope you have found this blog interesting!

Forest Schools

dsc00388
Forest schools is when young children go outside into the woodland area and explore by being innovative.
Last week a group of children went to find an appropriate area for us to start our innovative scots invention.
dsc00357

This week we were split into groups of 3 and 4. When we arrived in our designated area, we found materials which we could use and thought of possible inventions which we could make.
dsc00392

dsc00393

We had to plan using a template given to us. We had to answer: what materials we could use, ideas that we could invent and draw and label our chosen invention.
dsc00413
We had a very fun time and can’t wait until next week to start building!
