Homework 11th November – Due 15th November

Spelling – Access https://www.spellingcity.com/users/MrsKHorne, select the correct lists (week 7) use spellingcity’s games to help you learn your words. Each week you are also to learn five words that you have selected yourself with the spelling rule taught on Mondays. These will not be on spelling city. Instead practise the rule making your words using active strategies (writing words on a partners back to guess, make with pasta or play doh, rainbow writing, cheerleading the words etc…). You do not hand evidence of this in to school. It should be short, fun and engaging. You will complete a short dictation which uses words of a similar difficulty, though not the 5 specific words, which follow the spelling rule on Fridays.

Remember to check your dictation for corrections each week!

Numeracy – Sumdog Challenge – This week is the East Renfrewshire Sumdog Challenge. Participants answer as many questions as they can to obtain a score for accurate answers (out of 1000 as this is the maximum).

Accuracy is key! Good Luck!

If you were unable to complete your numeracy graph homework during Halloween Week this should be completed instead of Sumdog. You may chose to then compete in the Sumdog Challenge if you have time.

Other – As discussed in class, research either igneous, metamorphic or sedimentary rock formation. To share this information you can either create a flow chart, cartoon strip or poster with one labelled image. Keep it simple. We will work in groups in Friday’s science lesson to share how each type of rock is formed, and identify their features in rock samples and images.

Shadow Puppet Theatre

This wek we completed our light and sound topic by using shadow creatively. We had to design shadow puppets which were recogniseable to tell a well known story. We then showed the class our shadow puppets. Every group was a success. We used our puppets to act out Humpty Dumpty, Goldielocks and the Three Bears, The Gingerbread Man and The Three Pigs.

LKP Elections

This afternoon we joined other P6 and P7 members of our houses to listen to the candidates for the Kirkhill Parliament. They had prepared speeches, explaining the qualities they had which would make them a great house captain and then we voted for the most persuasive candidate. All candidates for all houses were very confident and impressive. It was an exciting afternoon.

Volume

This week in numeracy we have been learning about volume. We investigated scales on different measuring jugs, we looked at the different units of measurement, we calculated the volumes shown by markings that didn’t have numbers and we read volumes using the scales.

We are now learning to convert l to ml. We do this by multiplying by 1000. It can be quite tricky when there are decimals involved. To mulitply by 1000 you move everything 3 places to the left, the decimal point stays still, so 0.025l would be 25ml.

Owl Magic

Today we were visited by owls during our assembly. Margaret handled the owls. Shravan enjoyed the start, one of the owls spread its wings and looked like it was going to fly. Marcus learned that the owls had orange, black and yellow eyes. Jonathan found it interesting that owls are the only birds with eyes right at the front of their face so they don’t have a blindspot. Alexander Benson discovered owls have 10x stronger hearing than a dog. Alasdair remembered learning about an owl having two ears, one being at its jaw and one at its eye, and that it uses its hearing more than its sight. It was a very informative and exciting assembly, enjoyed by the whole class!

Talking and Listening – At some point during the week please sit down with your family to discuss your use of technology. During this time you should share some of the discussions which arose through our Internet Safety questionnaire on Thursday (Which information you should share online, images – trustworthy sources, do they show the whole picture and permission to share others’ images, your ‘online reputation’ – controlling who views your images and comments, who may view them in future, how your posts from behind your screen can affect others and how others’ posts and comments affect you…). This is an opportunity for you to discuss anything which may have affected you, or people you know, with your family and to talk about what you would or could do if you were upset by something online. You could even come up wth a plan where you regularly share with an adult what you have been using your online time to view so that both they, and you know you are safe if you all wish and do not already have this in place.  Having access to the internet requires trust and responsibilty, so try to be open and honest about what you do, and what you should do.

If you come up with any really good ideas that other families could use to help improve their internet safety we will be discussing these on Thursday during ICT.

Road Safety Competition

I have attached below the information which you will also have received through the Friday Bundle. If you wish toi submit an entry for the competition you are welcome to work on this over the holidays. You will also have the opportunity to complete this as your homework task for the first week back. Any entries should be brought in on Friday 25th October 2019., with your name, age, class and school on the reverse.

Literacy Additional Task – Access https://www.readtheory.org – Using your personal login and password please spend time this week reading and answering questions fo at least one passage.

Numeracy/Science – If possible this week (weather allowing) create a sundial outside your house. This is best completed on a sunny day. As modelled in school on Wednesday, you could return to the same spot throughout the day and mark your shadow line each hour, or you could push a stick onto soil and mark the shadow over the passing hours in a more inventive way .

CHALLENGE EXTENSION QUESTION – Does your shadow move around by the same angle each hour? If it did what angle should be there be between each hour line marked on the ground? Can you explain this?

If you are able to complete this task you can ‘hand in’ a photo on teams or just tell us what you did on Friday.
