{"id":3448,"date":"2023-03-01T15:08:22","date_gmt":"2023-03-01T15:08:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/er\/healthierminds\/?page_id=3448"},"modified":"2024-08-06T13:44:16","modified_gmt":"2024-08-06T13:44:16","slug":"individualised-support-for-emotional-wellbeing","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/er\/healthierminds\/emotionally-based-school-absenteeism\/individualised-support-for-emotional-wellbeing\/","title":{"rendered":"Support Strategies and Intervention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For practitioners who are leading the response to individual cases, it is important to ensure their approach is encouraging consistent engagement in school life, minimising factors that pull the young person away from their learning, and developing the child or young person\u2019s resilience.\u00a0 Successful outcomes are underpinned where children and young people feel listened to and understood, and where they are supported to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Develop their ambition, aspiration and motivation;<\/li>\n<li>Increase their confidence, self-esteem, self-efficacy, and value in themselves;<\/li>\n<li>Develop feelings of safety, security and a sense of belonging within the school;<\/li>\n<li>Have positive experiences where they can succeed;<\/li>\n<li>Develop positive relationships with peers and \/ or staff;<\/li>\n<li>Understand the relationship between their thoughts, feelings and behaviour;<\/li>\n<li>Work in partnership with their family, the school and external professionals;<\/li>\n<li>Develop a sense of direction and purpose in their education, with a clear end goal in sight, such as training or employment in a preferred area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 (West Sussex council (adapted), 2021)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Practitioners have the most control and influence over the child or young person\u2019s school experience.\u00a0 The school experience often needs to be adapted to become a better fit for individuals who are vulnerable to EBSA, one that promotes their strengths and resilience factors and minimises the risks.\u00a0 Successful outcomes are more likely where practitioners:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are empowered to be adaptable and flexible;<\/li>\n<li>Are solution focussed;<\/li>\n<li>Plan to reduce EBSA gradually over time;<\/li>\n<li>Promote individual attendance and engagement on the basis of pupil voice, their interests and strengths;<\/li>\n<li>Recognise small achievements and progress along the way;<\/li>\n<li>Identify some \u2018quick wins\u2019 that give the young person a sense of progress and achievement;<\/li>\n<li>Seek to improve the child or young person\u2019s whole school connectedness, looking specifically at their relationships and appropriate curricular experiences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">\u00a0(O\u2019Hagan, Bond &amp; Hebron, 2022).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>School practitioner can offer individualised support in a number of ways.
