Mental Health support for deaf children

The National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) is the leading charity dedicated to creating a world without barriers for deaf children and young people.

NDCS Scotland is becoming increasingly concerned about the mental health of Scotland’s deaf children and young people. We know that mental health issues can affect all children and young people, but statistics show that deaf children and young people are particularly vulnerable. Mental health problems are likely to affect 40% of deaf children and young people compared to 25% of other children and young people. Despite these significant numbers Scotland currently has no specialist mental health services in place to give our children and young people a helping hand when they need it most.On the 5th of February 2013 NDCS Scotland will launch its Helping Hand campaign in Scottish Parliament. We will highlight this issue to MSPs and urge them to call on the Scottish Government to build on services that already exist to provide a specialised mental health support for deaf children and young people in Scotland.”
