This week in P6b we have been learning about…

Internet Safety Day

On Tuesday it was Internet Safety Day and we had a visit from our campus cop, PC Mitchell. He spoke to the P6’s about how to stay safe online and answered lots of very interesting and responsible questions.

Maths

Within maths, we spent time revising some key concepts including coordinates. The learners enjoyed applying their knowledge of reading and plotting coordinates by playing battleships. Everyone enjoyed this game and we now know a new maths game we can use to consolidate prior learning.

Literacy

This week in writing, we continued learning about procedural writing. Last week we created a set of instructions inspired by the minions and our writing aimed to help them steal the moon. This week as part of our new IDL focus of engineering, we created paper airplanes then wrote a set of instructions. We finished off the lesson by launching our airplanes in the playground!

Open Afternoons

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend this week’s open afternoons. It was lovely to see so many of you and I know the children enjoyed showing their work and classroom to their’s and their friend’s family members.

I hope you all have a lovely February weekend!

This week in P6b we have been learning about…

Playzone

Today the first three groups led their own play zone sessions. The learners applied the leadership and coaching skills that they learned about last week. Everyone was given positive feedback and a target to work towards for next time.

Milestones

This week the learners completed their final sessions on the IDL focus, which was religious milestones. We explored milestones within Judaism, Christianity, Sikhism and Hinduism. The learners displayed their learning for the rest of the school to see in the corridor.

PE

This week we started our new PE focus, which is basketball. The lesson focused on using the meta skill of communication then learning about different passes. The learners showed good resilience and team work.

I hope everyone has a lovely weekend and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at next week’s open afternoons.

This week in P6b we have been learning about…

Lunar New Year

This week we learned about Lunar New Year and that it is the year of the snake. We discovered the zodiac animals and traditions that are celebrated during Lunar New Year. Some of the learners shared the story of how the zodiac animals got their place in the big race.

Growth Mindset

We continued to develop our knowledge of the difference between a growth and a fixed mindset. Learners used their creativity to create a poster to showcase their knowledge.

Committee Week

Some of our committee reps had the chance to share the classes views at their meetings. We’re looking forward to hearing them present at next week’s assembly.

Playzone

Today, Tony Bryson joined us for our first playzone session. The learners explored what makes a positive leader and the 3 golden rules for effective coaching. Everyone was separated into their playzone groups and started planning for their first coaching session next week.

I hope you have a lovely weekend!

This week in P6b we have been learning about…

Health and Well-being

We continued learning about growth mindsets and the strategies we can use to support us to make positive choices. Our health and well-being lessons supported us whilst preparing and performing the P6 show. We also practiced our debate skills, whilst learning about stereotypes.

Good Morning Crookfur
The highlight of everyone’s week was performing Good Morning Crookfur in front of an audience filled with family. Everyone was super proud of themselves and enjoyed the experience!

This week in P6b we have been learning about…

Growth Mindset

Today we started our next health and well-being block which focuses on growth mindset. We reminded ourselves of the differences between a fixed and a growth mindset then started creating our own learning passports. This linked well to this week’s assembly theme which also explored the importance of having a growth mindset.

Scots Language

We have continued learning about Scots language through literacy and music. We studied Rabbie Burns, “Auld Lang Syne” and we now have a better understanding of the message of this song. During writing, we turned our Scots comic strips into imaginative stories and experimented with our use of Scots language.

Behind the Scenes Photos

As promised in last week’s blog, please enjoy some behind the scenes photos of our show rehearsals.

Everyone has received their tickets for the show and we can’t wait to see you all next week! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Friday 10th January 2025

Happy new year! P6b enjoyed sharing their news after the winter break and have learned about new years traditions around the world. Everyone also created their own New Year’s resolutions and learned about SMART targets.

This week marked the beginning of our P6 show rehearsals. The teachers have been blown away by the learners commitment to learning lyrics, lines, dances and roles.  Last term we developed our drama toolboxes, exploring voice and movement. Rehearsals have provided learners with an opportunity to apply these skills. Next week I will post some behind the scenes photos from rehearsals.

This week in P6b we have been focusing on problem solving and developing our growth mindset.  Our new class motto is “have a go!“.

We learned about all 11 problem solving strategies. – T

The Problem Solving Strategies

  • Work backwards
  • Make a model
  • Reason logically
  • Guess, check and improve
  • Try a simpler case
  • Act it out
  • Draw a picture or diagram
  • Look for a pattern
  • Work together
  • Make a conclusion
  • Produce an organised table or list

We played a game called the Oscars Awards. We numbered 9 people from 1-9 with whiteboards.  They had to move themselves into 3 groups of 3 that totalled 15, then 14, 15 and 16, then 12, 15 and 18.  We used guess, check and improve, work together and act it out. – S

We were learning about all the strategies but we focused more on guess, check and improve.  We completed word problems and played guess the number. – S

Guess the number game: Miss McNeil thought of a number between 1 and 1000 and the class worked in groups to create a question to guess the number.  The first time we guessed it in 14 questions and the second time we guessed it in 7 questions.  We used guess, check and improve, reason logically and work together to solve the problem. – L

Friday 9th November 2024

This week in P6b we have showcased our school values and applied our knowledge of growth mindset in maths.

At the end of the week we worked in teams to put our mental maths skills to the test with a class blooket challenge. Miss McNeil was very impressed with everyone’s cooperation skills and resilience.

This week P6B visited the Glasgow Science Centre.

  • This week we went to the science centre and it was really fun.  My favourite part was making the dam to stop the water flowing through. – A
  • We spent time on each floor and then ended the day with watching a short film in the IMAX theatre. – A
  • In the IMAX theatre we watched a film about how astronauts get ready and prepared for their missions to space. – M
  • My favourite part was playing a game that tested your reaction time.  You had to press the button when they lit up green as quickly as possible. – I
  • There were rooms that were tilted and optical illusions. There was a planetarium room and it told us different information about space. For example, there was a display about the planets and we could see how big they are. – L
  • In the science centre, there was a hamster wheel. You had to run as quickly as possible to power it up and create electricity. There was also a bike that was very similar. – J and C
