This week in P6b we have been focusing on problem solving and developing our growth mindset.  Our new class motto is “have a go!“.

We learned about all 11 problem solving strategies. – T

The Problem Solving Strategies

  • Work backwards
  • Make a model
  • Reason logically
  • Guess, check and improve
  • Try a simpler case
  • Act it out
  • Draw a picture or diagram
  • Look for a pattern
  • Work together
  • Make a conclusion
  • Produce an organised table or list

We played a game called the Oscars Awards. We numbered 9 people from 1-9 with whiteboards.  They had to move themselves into 3 groups of 3 that totalled 15, then 14, 15 and 16, then 12, 15 and 18.  We used guess, check and improve, work together and act it out. – S

We were learning about all the strategies but we focused more on guess, check and improve.  We completed word problems and played guess the number. – S

Guess the number game: Miss McNeil thought of a number between 1 and 1000 and the class worked in groups to create a question to guess the number.  The first time we guessed it in 14 questions and the second time we guessed it in 7 questions.  We used guess, check and improve, reason logically and work together to solve the problem. – L

This week in P6b we have showcased our school values and applied our knowledge of growth mindset in maths.

At the end of the week we worked in teams to put our mental maths skills to the test with a class blooket challenge. Miss McNeil was very impressed with everyone’s cooperation skills and resilience.

This week P6B visited the Glasgow Science Centre.

  • This week we went to the science centre and it was really fun.  My favourite part was making the dam to stop the water flowing through. – A
  • We spent time on each floor and then ended the day with watching a short film in the IMAX theatre. – A
  • In the IMAX theatre we watched a film about how astronauts get ready and prepared for their missions to space. – M
  • My favourite part was playing a game that tested your reaction time.  You had to press the button when they lit up green as quickly as possible. – I
  • There were rooms that were tilted and optical illusions. There was a planetarium room and it told us different information about space. For example, there was a display about the planets and we could see how big they are. – L
  • In the science centre, there was a hamster wheel. You had to run as quickly as possible to power it up and create electricity. There was also a bike that was very similar. – J and C
