Today we had our culture celebration day. It was lovely to see so many pupils wearing clothing that represents their culture. Thank you to Ibrahim’s mum and sister for giving up their time and teaching the class how to make samosas, mango lassi and churros.

This week in P6b we have been enjoying the spring weather and have taken our learning outdoors. On Tuesday, the learners put their playzone leadership training sessions into practice by leading a PE session with P2c. Then we took our maths learning outdoors to create a range of games, such as number relay races, calculation tig and continued our learning about algebraic expressions by solving expressions using chalk.

The learners also received a special visit from a parent volunteer who spoke about his job as a civil engineer and the water purification process. Thank you Mr McDonald!

This week in P6b we continued developing our knowledge and skills when using pointillism in art. The learners applied their skills and created their own pieces of art. They also created an explanation text about pointillism and its’ founder, Georges Seuret during this week’s writing lesson.

Friday 21st March 2025

This week in P6b we have been learning about pointillism. We started a two week art and design inquiry, which will focus on investigating how pattern and colour is used within pointillism. This week the learners tried out the technique whilst consolidating their knowledge of the colour wheel.

The part that the learners found the most challenging was not being able to use a pallet to mix and combining the small dots to change the colours. Next week’s blog post will showcase some of the art work that was created.

This week in P6b we have had various opportunities to apply our problem solving skills within different areas of numeracy and maths. We have been working hard to learning about the problem solving process, as well as the various strategies. This week we combined these skills with our knowledge of 3D shapes and when we were exploring patterns.

Learning Journeys with Mr Atkinson

Hello to all the P6B blog readers, it’s Mr Atkinson here! As you will know this year I am doing NCCT for primary P6B with a focus on developing Crookfur’s Inquiry Based Learning approach so I wanted to give you an update of what we have been doing.

In our first Learning Journey – Exploring the Solar System, we revisited the planets and recorded some of their features in a comparison table including their size, distance from the sun, length of day etc. Using the Chromebooks we researched astronauts who had ventured into space and answered questions about them. In our investigations we discovered how planets have been studied by using Rover explorers. We were then set a challenge to design and construct a working 3D model of our very own Rovers! We were taught how to draw to scale and we revised different types of measurements. Afterwards, we used recyclable material to build the models and we had to make sure they had real-life features such as cameras, arms and an energy source. It was very challenging making wheels and a pulling system so it required a Growth Mindset to overcome the successes and failures during our tests. At the end of this Learning Journey we did a showcase with the other P6 class and P5/6 and presented our model rovers and showed how they worked. Amongst all of this we visited the Glasgow Science Centre and experienced the IMAX: Space – The New Frontier 3D show.

The class were then introduced to the META Skills of Creativity and Curiosity. We reflected on how these skills had already been utilized in our previous Learning Journey and discussed how they could be used in our upcoming focus on Fairtrade.

Our second Learning Journey –  Fairtrade, has been supported by the organisation Fairtrade International. First we discussed wants and needs of people from other countries and compared them with our own. Next we discovered where products are from and how purchasing Fairtrade items environmentally, socially and financially help those that farm and gather the resources. Working in groups or with a partner we created presentations using information we had researched and summarised about a specific Fairtrade product that most people would not know about. There were a lot of surprises! Afterwards we learned how solve profit and loss calculations using coins and we were shocked to discover where the profits go in the supply chain process! To finish off our Learning Journey we designed our very own Fairtrade items using Tinkercad and then applied our persuasive skills to create advertising posters for our products as well as an advert which we recorded on the iPads and some of us edited on iMovie.  Alongside our work and evidence gathered from P5/6 and P6A we are hopeful that our efforts will be eventually recognised by successfully renewing the FairAware Award.

We are now focusing on applying the new META Skills of Communicating and Collaborating in both school and in real life situations. In teams, we acted out an event where something had gone terribly wrong! We were then challenged to create two short performances on how the incident could be resolved through good communication skills and how it can escalate to a bigger problem when we become frustrated.

This week in P6b we have been learning about…

Internet Safety Day

On Tuesday it was Internet Safety Day and we had a visit from our campus cop, PC Mitchell. He spoke to the P6’s about how to stay safe online and answered lots of very interesting and responsible questions.

Maths

Within maths, we spent time revising some key concepts including coordinates. The learners enjoyed applying their knowledge of reading and plotting coordinates by playing battleships. Everyone enjoyed this game and we now know a new maths game we can use to consolidate prior learning.

Literacy

This week in writing, we continued learning about procedural writing. Last week we created a set of instructions inspired by the minions and our writing aimed to help them steal the moon. This week as part of our new IDL focus of engineering, we created paper airplanes then wrote a set of instructions. We finished off the lesson by launching our airplanes in the playground!

Open Afternoons

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend this week’s open afternoons. It was lovely to see so many of you and I know the children enjoyed showing their work and classroom to their’s and their friend’s family members.

I hope you all have a lovely February weekend!

This week in P6b we have been learning about…

Playzone

Today the first three groups led their own play zone sessions. The learners applied the leadership and coaching skills that they learned about last week. Everyone was given positive feedback and a target to work towards for next time.

Milestones

This week the learners completed their final sessions on the IDL focus, which was religious milestones. We explored milestones within Judaism, Christianity, Sikhism and Hinduism. The learners displayed their learning for the rest of the school to see in the corridor.

PE

This week we started our new PE focus, which is basketball. The lesson focused on using the meta skill of communication then learning about different passes. The learners showed good resilience and team work.

I hope everyone has a lovely weekend and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at next week’s open afternoons.

Friday 31st January 2025

This week in P6b we have been learning about…

Lunar New Year

This week we learned about Lunar New Year and that it is the year of the snake. We discovered the zodiac animals and traditions that are celebrated during Lunar New Year. Some of the learners shared the story of how the zodiac animals got their place in the big race.

Growth Mindset

We continued to develop our knowledge of the difference between a growth and a fixed mindset. Learners used their creativity to create a poster to showcase their knowledge.

Committee Week

Some of our committee reps had the chance to share the classes views at their meetings. We’re looking forward to hearing them present at next week’s assembly.

Playzone

Today, Tony Bryson joined us for our first playzone session. The learners explored what makes a positive leader and the 3 golden rules for effective coaching. Everyone was separated into their playzone groups and started planning for their first coaching session next week.

I hope you have a lovely weekend!
