Primary 5/6: Week Beginning 22/05/23

Mr Atkinson’s comment:

This week the primary 6 pupils enjoyed a visit to Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and attended the “Endangered and Extinct Wildlife” workshop. Whilst we were away the primary 5 pupils had a fantastic time finishing their natural-disaster safe buildings which you can see them model below. All the P1 Buddy letters have now been typed and re-drafted for Mrs Jamieson to review. Please carefully read Mrs McGuigan’s Weekly Round Up as it will contain important information about Sports Week and upcoming events.   .

Primary 5/6: Week Beginning 15/05/23

Mr Atkinson’s comment:

It was great welcoming some of the guardians and parents to our classroom this week! We hope you enjoyed your time visiting and helping with the natural disaster themed stations.

Literacy and English

John – In writing the primary 5 pupils created letters to their future P1 buddies. They wrote about all the exciting things at Crookfur Primary as well as some memories from primary 1. The primary 6 pupils wrote recounts about their favourite memories from P6.

Chloe – To help us with our writing Mrs Jamieson came to our class and explained to us the role of being a P1 buddy and the primary 6 pupils shared their experiences.

Kyler – The reading skill we have been developing in our comprehension lesson this week was inferring. This involves carefully studying the text and looking for clues or suggestions that the author makes to help us write a sensible answer.

Numeracy and Maths

Emma – My group has been continuing to revise multiplying and dividing with 2,3 and 4 digit numbers involving remainders, carrying and exchanging.

Health and Wellbeing

Lewis – This week in P.E. we applied the skills we have been learning in tennis to rounders! We used our forehand stroke to hit and direct the ball.

Ruairidh – On Monday we learned how to serve over the net in tennis. Mr Atkinson told us that when serving you need to be behind the baseline and make sure to aim the ball diagonally into the service box. We worked hard to improve our technique including throwing the ball in the air correctly and we got two serves to get the ball into the box. We also took part in volley rallies with a partner which was challenging but fun!

IDL – Natural Disasters

Archie – For our open afternoon we had six natural disaster themed stations. In groups we created earthquake proof structures out of materials, using the Kapla we built a structure that could withstand a tornado, we wrote an imaginative diary entry of us surviving our chosen natural disaster, we researched and created an information leaflet of a natural disaster, we painted  The Great Wave by Hokusai and we had to solve a maths challenge whereby we had only £20 to spend to buy items for a survival kit.

Aarohi and Sophie – This week we learned about how tsunamis occur and the journey they take to reach land. We also discovered the terrible destruction they can cause to coastal areas.

Primary 5/6: Week Beginning 08/05/23

Mr Atkinson’s comment:

Once again thank you for the donation of materials that we will be using for our open afternoon and I very much look forward to seeing parents and guardians during these sessions.

Literacy and English

Harley – This week was our last week of creating instructional pieces of writing. We were challenged to design a new sport that we could either use with the pupils that we look after when we are prefecting as well as try some of the activities during our upcoming P.E. lessons which we will then evaluate. We also illustrated our instructions so that the reader can check that they are doing everything correctly and we used time openers and bossy verbs.

Mehr – We all took part in a spelling check-up to see the improvements we have made over the year.

Leo – All the groups have finished their books, Stormbreaker and Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief, so we worked in pairs and created questions based on the novels which we asked each other to answer.

Numeracy and Maths

Finlay – One of the activities we did this week was designing posters based on all the different concepts we have learned recently. We have put them on our Maths display!

IDL – Natural Disasters

Kyler – We have been learned about the different types of volcanoes and how they are formed. We then chose which type we wanted to draw and labelled the features of volcanoes.

Emma – To help us better understand why natural disasters happen we have been learning about tectonic plates and how they move. We also explored where the boundaries are and what the Ring of Fire is.

Aarohi – Working in groups we painted a tsunami, volcano, tornado and earthquake.

RME

Mehr – With Mrs Nasar we learned about the 10 plagues.

Expressive Arts

John – We have reviewing our art pieces and chose our favourite to be displayed in our P5/6 Art exhibition. We each gave our artwork titles and wrote which artistic style inspired us.

Primary 5/6: Week Beginning 01/05/23

Mr Atkinson’s comment:

This week the pupils enjoyed learning about the coronation of King Charles III and his life. Having been inspired from some of the videos they watched the pupils went on to create some fabulous artwork!

Literacy and English

Archie and Tia – In Literacy we have been learning about how to make conclusions. We discovered that by using our knowledge of inferring and summarising then we can make sensible conclusions based on clues from the story.

Ruairidh – In our writing this week we upleveled recipes we had used during our Eid celebration last week, making sure we included time openers, imperative verbs and detailed descriptions.

Numeracy and Maths

Zainab –  My group has been revising how to multiply four digit numbers by one digit involving carrying.

Harley –Primary 6 have been learning how to order fractions by applying our understanding of simplifying and making fractions equivalent.

Health and Wellbeing

Kyler – In P.E. we have begun to apply our skills of hitting the ball with our forehand, aiming and control to competitive games.

IDL – Natural Disasters

Retal – During one of our natural disaster lessons we learned about the different layers of the earth and used Play-Doh to recreate the inner core, outer core, mantle and crust. Afterwards we cut our planets in half to see the layers.

Leo – We also learned about the differences between the natural disasters.

Primary 5/6: Week Beginning 24/04/23

Mr Atkinson’s comment:

Thank you for all the lovely messages regarding my wedding this weekend, it is very much appreciated! This week the pupils have thoroughly enjoyed all the wonderful events with us celebrating Earth Day and Eid as well as attending the primary 4 show rehearsal. Below is a picture of the class modelling their t-shirt bags!

Literacy and English

Ruairidh – For writing we have been learning how to write instructions for drinks. We were challenged to include time openers so that we follow the steps in chronological order. We also used ‘bossy verbs’ and illustrated the steps so that they were easier to follow.

Lewis – We also turned our previous writing pieces into chapters and stapled them together to create a short story book. We then illustrated the front cover, wrote a blurb at the back and recorded the price, author and illustrator in the corner.

Numeracy and Maths

John – My group has started learning about how to create equivalent fractions and find a fraction of a quantity.

Retal –  Some of us learned how to multiply using factors which made multiplying two-digit numbers together easier.

Health and Wellbeing

Eva – In our tennis lesson this week we were developing our accuracy by hitting forehand shots towards targets. It was challenging but very fun!

Tia – In the P5 philosophy lesson we took turns reading sections from a passage and then discussed the main points from it. We listened carefully to each other and shared our opinions.

Leo – For our final Substance Misuse lesson we acted out scenes of what can happen to someone when they misuse medicine by ignoring the side effects or guidance.

RME

Tia, Aarohi and Chloe – On Friday the school celebrated Eid! Some of the activities our class took part in included making fruit salad and a traditional cookie, getting henna on our hands, designing lanterns and visiting the hall to see the different stations.

IDL – Natural Disasters

Kyler – This week we started our new natural disasters topic! In groups we researched the types of disasters that occur in different parts of the world on the Chromebooks. We then typed some of the information onto our Google Slide presentation.
