Primary 5/6: Week Beginning 17/04/23

Mr Atkinson’s comment:

I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to all the well researched Solo-Talks that have been shared recently with the class! I am very proud of the pupils and thank you for supporting them with this activity. This week the pupils have been learning about Ramadan and designed cards to celebrate Eid.

Literacy and English

Zainab – This week in our writing lesson we created poems called ‘I Am..’ which were about us.  We included information about our hobbies, interests and feelings that we experience. Afterwards, we re-drafted them and decorated a border with themes from the poems which we then mounted our poems onto for our new display.

Archie –  Our reading skills that we have developing this week was predicting. We discussed how to make predictions and what strategies we can use to make an educated guess with the help of clues within a text.

Ruairidh and Maya – The primary 5 children were learning how to make words plurals by using “ves” in their spelling tasks and the primary 6 children were growing different words.

Numeracy and Maths

Harley – My group has started a new topic about fractions. This week we have been revising what fractions are and discussing examples of fractions in real life.

Eva –  Some of us have been learning about multiples and what is a lowest common multiple. We have also been revising our times tables to help us with this new topic.

Health and Wellbeing

Aarohi – In our Substance Misuse lesson we learned about the different types of medicine, where to store them and the warnings and side effects associated with them.

Isla – We have started developing our tennis skills this week, focusing on our forehand and aiming.

Outdoor Learning

Emma – When we returned to school we removed all the dead leaves that had fallen into our planters and watered the soil to help the plants and seeds grow.

Technology

Chloe – This week we finish our technology block of learning by creating our own step counters using the Microbits which we tested outside! We also programmed the Microbits to play the game Rock, Paper and Scissors against us.

Primary 5/6: Week Beginning 20/03/23

Mr Atkinson’s comment:

I hope everyone has a wonderful Easter break and I look forward to hearing all your stories when you return!

Literacy and English

Ruairidh – This week the primary 6 pupils delivered their Solo-Talks to the class. It was very interesting listening about all the different topics and when we return from the holiday the primary 5 pupils will then present their Solo-Talks.

Finlay – We have been continuing to read our group novels and our focus was on clarifying unfamiliar words. We achieved this by using different strategies to help with determining what  word means, then we checked their definitions in a dictionary and finally we wrote a similar word to our new word that we had just learned in our jotters.

Numeracy and Maths

John – We have been learning how to use estimating and rounding to help with solving challenging addition and subtraction questions. However, we also assessed the usefulness of estimating and decided that although estimating can make calculations easier to solve, this method can be inaccurate and unhelpful with real life examples such as building.

Tia – This week my group learned about Complementary and Supplementary angles and how to find out the missing angle. We also explored how degrees are linked with directions and we then solved map questions that involved applying all of our knowledge to reach a destination.

Health and Wellbeing

Kate – For Rights Respecting Week we all took part in a competition to design a new logo related to the UNCRC.

Sara – In groups we chose from one of the UNCRC articles and then created presentations based on our chosen article. We then shared the information that we had researched with the rest of the class.

Chloe – During our Substance Misuse lessons we learned about how our vision and other senses can be negatively affected.

Technology

Aarohi and Retal – This week we programmed our Microbits to become compasses and thermometers. We also created fading heart animations and sent messages to each through the devices.
