Primary 5/6: Week Beginning 20/03/23

Mr Atkinson’s comment:

The pupils thoroughly enjoyed participating in the K’Nex Challenge which required them to build bridges of a certain length. A winning design was then selected and the students went on to compete against the other class winners across primary 6 by building a crane. Well done to everyone for some excellent and interesting models!

Ruairidh – My group has been learning the names of the different types of angles, what they look like and how to describe the features of an acute, obtuse, right and reflex angle.

Sophia – The P6 have been revising how to divide 2 and 3 digit numbers involving remainders.

Heena – Miss Hutchison gave us a problem solving task which challenged us to calculate answers to questions to find out a bank pin number.

Health and Wellbeing

Retal – In Netball we were developing our knowledge and skills of blocking, marking and intercepting.

Maya – On Monday we worked in groups to research different types of dances from other countries and cultures. We then took part in our own version of Strictly Come Dancing and performed the dances to the class!

Primary 5/6: Week Beginning 13/03/23

Mr Atkinson’s comment:

The pupils worked incredibly hard this week to plan, create and record a video entry for a Clyde in the Classroom competition! We also said goodbye to Miss Ross who has finished her placement with us. On behalf of the class and myself I would like to wish her all the best! The class organised a farewell party for Miss Ross by designing banners, decorating her chair, signed cards for her and enjoyed watching a Clyde in the Classroom/Titanic inspired movie!

Literacy and English

Ruairidh – This week we added the problem and challenge that our characters would have to overcome in our imaginative writing pieces. We had to carefully think about how this issue would impact the plot and how our characters would respond to the new situation. We have also continued to use descriptive vocabulary and speech marks.

Numeracy and Maths

Tia – My group has been exploring how to calculate the area and perimeter of shapes. We learned that to determine the area we had to use the formula l x b and to add up all the sides when finding the perimeter. Once we were confident with this we then drew our own robots and recorded their area and perimeter! We also have been drawing shapes with particular areas and perimeters.

Kate and Maya- This week the primary 6 pupils finished their number topic by applying a range of mental maths strategies such as rounding to the nearest 10 or 100 to make the numbers easier to add together. We were also challenged to solve more tricky word problems involving addition and subtraction.

Health and Wellbeing

John – With Miss Hutchison we played Netball matches and were encouraged to use our skills that we have been working on the last few weeks.

Kyler – In P.E. with Miss Ross we were introduced to different types of cultural dancing such as Bollywood and Ceilidh dancing! We all tried having a go at copying the routines.

Alfie – In groups we researched and presented on either the nutritional needs of different age groups or festival foods from other cultures.

Spanish

Aarohi and Chloe – In Spanish with Miss Hutchison we learned how to say the different types of weather. We also played a game whereby we had to act out what was said in Spanish!

Clyde in the Classroom

Harley – We researched and took note of how to keep rivers clean for our Clyde in the Classroom video entry. We discovered that by putting litter in bins, stopping pollution and reducing our use of plastic that these will improve habitats for fish. Afterwards we used our new knowledge by creating a script for our video and acted out our parts.

Expressive Arts

Sophie – We have been learning about realism in Art and how to create this. We looked at different types of landscapes and then used tone and shading to create darker and lighter areas in our drawings.

Aarohi – After learning about what Pop Art was with Miss Ross we were inspired to create our own using our prior skills of line, pattern design and colour.

Primary 5/6: Week Beginning 06/03/23

Mr Atkinson’s comment:

P5/6 has had a very busy week! On Monday they cleared and emptied the planters in the courtyard and planted a range of flower bulbs. Again thank you for donating pots and seeds/bulbs to help us with this project. I’m also delighted to announce that all the excellent effort done in class with the Fairtrade topic has resulted in the school being awarded the FairAware Award!

Literacy and English

Leo – In our groups we have been drawing the main events that have occurred in our recent chapter and then illustrated our predictions based on the information we currently know. We’ll look back at these next week to see how accurate we were!

Eva – In our second imaginative writing lesson we continued our story from last week by writing our next paragraph. This paragraph focused on introducing our characters by explaining their personality and appearance We achieved this by including more similes, metaphors, adjectives and speech marks.

Kyler – Our comprehension this week focused on exploring characters which linked with our writing lesson.

Numeracy and Maths

Isla and Chloe – In one of our Maths lessons we were challenged to sequence numbers in both the digit and word format as well as describe their relationship by using the symbols greater than, less than and equal to.

Sophie – The primary 6 pupils have be working on adding several 3-4 digit numbers which made our calculations more challenging.

Health and Wellbeing

Harley – For P.E. on Monday we started creating new dance routines collaboratively. We had to come up with a sequence of moves for 8 beats.

Finlay – With Miss Hutchison we continued to develop our chest, bounce and overhead passes in Netball.

Outdoor Learning

Sara – During our outdoor learning session we tidied the courtyard and cleared all the planters by removing the dead leaves. Afterwards we planted different types of flower bulbs in the planters which we are excited to watch grow!

Spanish

Zainab – In Spanish with Miss Hutchison we learned how to say the days of the week and different months.

IDL – Fairtrade

Kate – At both assemblies some of us spoke about what we have learned during our Fairtrade topic this term for Fairtrade Fortnight!

Maya – As we have now finished our Fairtrade topic we went back to our KWL sheet and updated with by summarising what we have learned. Another activity we did in our final lesson was listing what we thought were the important methods of how to raise awareness of Fairtrade.

Lewis – We also took part in a challenge about cotton! We had to produce ‘cotton t-shirts’ using a certain amount of materials but as time went on Miss Ross gave us scenarios which changed how many and how quickly we could make them. This was to show us how real life issues can impact producers of these materials.

Primary 5/6: Week Beginning 27/02/23

Mr Atkinson’s comment:

It has been an exciting week in P5/6 with releasing our trout’s on Monday and taking part in World Book Day! Next week, in our outdoor learning session, we will be clearing out planters in preparation for creating our garden for our John Muir award. Some of the pupils in the class will also be working with Miss Ross on finalising the Fairtrade presentation which they will share with the school on Friday.

Chloe – The primary 5 pupils have been spelling words that have “ch,” “sh” and “th” in them.

Retal – We all had fun trying to guess who were the Masked Readers as part of World Book Day!

Ruairidh – Also for World Book Day we researched the life of Roald Dahl in class and then presented what we had learned to the school at assembly.

Numeracy and Maths

Mehr – The P6 pupils have been learning how to estimate, measure and calculate the duration of activities in seconds. Once we were confident with this we went outside and time each other using stopwatches. Even Miss Ross and Mr Atkinson raced!

Aarohi – The P5 pupils have been revising different types of mentals maths strategies to help them solve addition and subtraction calculations.

Health and Wellbeing

Sara and Sophie – In our creative dance lesson we warmed-up by doing both static and dynamic stretching and then we made group routines which we later added to our class routine.

Maya – In groups we researched the different types of dietary restrictions some people may have due to either their religion, allergies or preferences. We shared our knowledge to the class either on a Jamboard or PowerPoint.

Expressive Arts

John – In Art with Miss Ross we created drawings of people by using a continuous line. It was challenging at first but it was interesting to see everyone’s different designs and unique features.

IDL – Fairtrade

Archie – One of our Fairtrade activities was a negotiation challenge! We were given different roles of either a buyer or seller as well as scenarios. We had to reach deals and agreements with different people and then calculate if we made a profit or loss which then helped us to determine if we could meet our basic needs as farmers.
