Primary 5/6: Week Beginning 20/02/23

Mr Atkinson’s comment:

Well done to the primary 6 pupils for a fantastic performance in their Broons Guide to Scotland show, I hope parents and guardians enjoyed watching it

If anyone has spare or unwanted flower bulbs we would welcome the donation as the class will be helping to create a Crookfur garden over the coming weeks.

On Monday we will be releasing the trout’s that the pupils have worked hard to care for. Please can pupils come to school with their outdoor clothing to allow them to full participate in this activity.

Please could the Reading Buddies bring along one of their favourite books to read to their buddy on Thursday. The Reading Buddies can also select a book from the class library that they enjoy if they cannot bring one from home.

Literacy and English

Retal – For comprehension the primary 5 pupils answered a range of questions on our group novel Stormbreaker and the primary 6 pupils completed tasks related to a Broons text.

Lewis and John – This was our final week of persuasive writing. On Friday we wrote a persuasive letter to the council requesting for more Fairtrade products to be used in schools such as footballs, chocolate and bananas. We were challenged to use all of our skills such as rhetorical questions, exaggeration, WOW words and persuasive vocabulary to create an impactful letter.

Numeracy and Maths

Emma – We started a new topic which involved writing in both the word and number format numbers to 10,000. Afterwards we ordered and put numbers into different sequences.

Kyler – In our Data Handling topic we first created tally charts to record information and then we used the results to make bar graphs. We discussed the importance of choosing an appropriate scale when drawing our graphs.

John and Mehr – We have been using timetables to calculate durations, start and finish times. After we were confident with this we then started converting minutes into seconds.

Sara – The primary 6 pupils have also explored calendars by discussing leap years and answering questions involving dates. Afterwards, we were challenged to add our own events to calendars.

Clyde in the Classroom

Ruairidh – The class wrote lyrics and created a theme song for Clyde in the Classroom this week! With Miss Ross we painted a river and learned about the different parts and features, for example; source, mouth and a tributary.

Expressive Arts

Aarohi – We have started exploring different artists and techniques. This week using our knowledge of the colour wheel we created abstract landscape paintings.

Broons Guide to Scotland Show

Sophia and Alfie – On Thursday morning we had our dress rehearsal with some of the primary 5 pupils and then in the afternoon we performed to our families! The next day we went along to both assemblies and sang all our songs to everyone in the school!

Primary 5/6: Weeks Beginning 06/02/23 and 13/02/23

Rehearsing for the P6 Broons Guide to Scotland show has begun! The pupils have been working very hard to remember their individual lines and songs, thank you for supporting this at home.

Literacy and English

Retal – For our first piece of writing we were asked to create persuasive speeches based on one of the following topics; Fairtrade, pollution, healthy eating or why animals shouldn’t be kept in zoos. This led to some interesting discussions!

Tia – Our next writing task was to create an advert to persuade people to buy a Fairtrade product. We drew our products and we were challenged to create an exciting description by using exaggeration, WOW words and a catchy slogan which some of us used alliteration for.

Numeracy and Maths

Ruairidh – We finished our weight topic by applying our knowledge of converting to help us with solving word problems that involved adding and subtracting.

Health and Wellbeing

Kyler – In P.E. with Miss Hutchison we have started learning how to play Netball. This week we did some chest passing games and drills.

Spanish

Zainab – In Spanish with Miss Hutchison we learned how to count up to 20. We listened to a song and played games to help us learn the Spanish numbers.

Science

Lewis – In Science we have begun investigating about sound. We found out that sound travels in straight lines but once it hits a wall it bounces back and changes direction in the form of an echo.

Chloe – In another lesson we researched and made a PowerPoint about how different animals communicate using soundwaves like whales, dolphins and bats. Afterwards, we shared our findings with the rest of the class.

IDL – Fairtrade

Aarohi – In one of our Fairtrade lessons we researched different countries where Fairtrade products are produced and recorded this on our maps. We also learned about how buying Fairtrade products supports the producers.
