Primary 5/6: Weeks Beginning 15/08/22 and 22/08/22

Mr Atkinson’s comment:

It has been great getting to know all the pupil over the last two weeks and hearing about their summer adventures! I am looking forward to sharing their learning journey through this blog every week and on Twitter. I have listed some key information below:

P.E. in the hall will take place on Monday mornings with myself and P.E. in the MUGA will take place on Thursday mornings with Mr McMillan. Please remember to come to school with appropriate clothing in order to fully participate in these lessons especially as the Scottish weather can be unpredictable!

Literacy and English

Alfie – We created postcards which challenged us to summarise some of our highlights from the holidays. Afterwards, we drew a picture of one of a memorable moments from summer.

Kyler – This week we started reading our class novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone!

Aarohi – We created wizard and witches character profiles based on our hobbies and talents. Mr Atkinson challenged us to use descriptive vocabulary and think how our interests could be related to the classes at Hogwarts. When we finished our writing we drew ourselves dressed as first year Hogwarts students.

John – After reading the first chapter of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone we were challenged to make inferences based on the last couple of paragraphs. To do this we used our new strategy of observing, wondering and then inferring.

Sophia – We created time capsules which we will open at the end of primary 5/6. First we wrote a letter to our future self, then measured our heights using string, drew around our hands and took a photograph of each other. Afterwards, we sealed these items in our decorated envelopes.

Numeracy and Maths

Harley – One of our Maths lessons involved different Harry Potter themed stations! We had to solve multiplication calculations to decode a spell and to determine the magical ability of different wizard and witches. In one of the other activities we were challenged to answer problem solving questions about some of the main characters. There was also a station where we could select different Maths games on the Chromebooks.

Health and Wellbeing

Emma – We played team games using the parachute in P.E. with Mr Atkinson!

Archie – With Mr McMillan we have started learning how to improve our hockey skills.

Sara – The P6 pupils have been enjoying helping their P1 buddies around the school and we are also excited to start prefecting on a Friday!

Eva D – This week we have been learning about different rights and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child ( UNCRC ).  Afterwards, we used our knowledge of the articles to create a class charter. We voted on a camping theme which led us designing miniature tents and trees to help us create our very own “Camp Charter”.

Expressive Arts

Retal – Upon returning to school we have been speaking about what we would like our classroom to look like. We decided to create a Platform 9 3/4 display for our class door as it links with the class novel. This took a lot of teamwork and effort! First, we had to apply our Maths skills by using our knowledge of measurement when calculating the height and width of the door. Then we worked in teams to sketch and paint pictures. Finally, we carefully cut out our display so that it would fit on top of the door. It was great fun designing this!

Kate – To help everyone to get to know each other we created personality swirl artwork. We divided the paper into sections and then drew our name, hobbies, talents and interests in each part. They look amazing!

Ruairidh – At the beginning of the week we designed our group table logos and then came up with interesting names!
