Reflecting on our learning.

Common Word Challenge

We enjoyed our common word challenge. We had to take turns to give our partner a word to write. They had to sound out the letters and then we helped each other by peer assessing to check if the words were correct or offer help to make changes.

Story Books

We spent time using our reading skills to read new books. One of the stories was about a big rabbit that got stuck in a hole. In another book the boy and the girl were watching TV. They were watching animals and talking about the different kinds of animals. We enjoyed discussing the characters and the sequence of events.

Monsters

We selected the theme of monster for our literacy learning this week. We read stories together and used new texts to decode words. We made monster pictures and wrote monster stories, which we are very proud of. We have made a lovely display in our classroom to share our work with others.

Ladybird bonds

We worked with our partners to look at all the different ways we could arrange the ladybird’s spots to make 10. We also used the number rhyme from our recent assembly to help us remember all the different combinations.

 Outdoor Play

We are in the process of developing our outdoor play area. We took time this week to help sort out the equipment and come up with ideas of how we could develop and use the area. We enjoyed investigating and exploring all the different materials.

 Activities we are proud of

Ollie and Ibrahim are proud of the tricky calculations they created on the easel.

Abu is pleased with his letter practice.

Finlay is proud of his list of number bonds for 9.

Zara worked hard to sound out and write each word.

We’re proud of our achievements!

Our Class Assembly

Primary 1a were delighted to perform our assembly ‘A day in the life of Primary 1’ to the school and our parents and carers today!

We sang a French song, recited a number rhyme which helps us remember our number bonds to 10, sang some Jolly Phonics songs and showed some of our Topic work.  We talked about what we are proud of learning and achieving in Primary 1 and finished with a song to celebrate our learning, showing some cool dance moves! What a fantastic performance!

World Book Week

For World Book Week we created story boxes showing the setting and characters from some of our favourite books, as a homework activity.

The dioramas created were amazing! The children worked so hard and put so much detail into their models.

We showed our models to the class and they asked us questions about them.

Well done Jamie for your ‘Three Billy Goats Gruff’ story box!

Designing and Creating Toys

As part of our Toys topic we designed and made toys from junk.

Some of us chose to work independently while others chose to work in a group. We had to problem solve and find ways to attach different parts. We had great fun!

Toys Workshop

We also learned a lot about toys from the past from our Toys Workshop. We discussed what makes a toy ‘old’ and got the opportunity to investigate and play with toys from the past.  We discussed how they compare to modern toys.

Other learning…

In Maths we have been learning the story of 8.

We know that spiders have 8 legs but we were rearranging their legs using playdoh for the spider’s body and lolly sticks for the legs to make different stories.

Zara has been working on her adding skills.

Abu and Zara can count and order numbers to 20!

Ben and Harley are playing a number bonds matching game.

We like practising our number bonds through games and activities.

Olivia can use coins to buy toys in our toy shop.

In Literacy because of the weather recently we thought we would read about snow!

Well done Shreya you used different strategies to work out unfamiliar words!

Zunairah matched up different phonemes and words on the lego bricks.

We enjoy reading stories together, helping each other with tricky common words, sounding out words and using clues in the text to help us. This week we read about an inventor who created something amazing with his magic box.

Then we wrote our own stories about what we might create with a magic box. We had to think what we would need to put into the box to make our amazing creations.

When we are playing we often choose to create our own written stories and practise writing our letters correctly.

Well done Primary 1a! Fantastic work!

Our Learning Adventures

Primary 1 have been learning about a variety of measuring units to understand the concept of weight. We achieved this by measuring every day things using rulers. We know beakers and jugs have the measurement of milliliters, a ruler has centimeters and inches and we can use scales to measure how heavy and light different resources are. We are great at problem solving so know if two things weigh the same, they are equal!

Children began to notice when placing a heavy object in to water, the water rises therefore increasing the volume. They were also comparing different measurements. Also, a fun task to complete involved creating a post card. The post card symbolised that letters and postal orders get weighed. We also know, the heavier the item is, dearer it is to post and the lighter an item is, the cheaper it will be.

Hishaam, Kate and Myra began to realise a ruler increases in length and measured the length of their creations using play dough.

We had the opportunity to measure a variety of resources. We know how a scale represents heavy, light and equal measurements.

In other Primary 1C news: We had a celebration for performing a great show to the whole school and to our parents! Miss Amin provided us with a ‘cinema experience’ as we enjoyed snacks and watched highlights from Toy Story.

Lastly, to celebrate World Book Day and to promote reading, we presented our amazing creations we completed at home! We wrote about our experience and shared our models to our peers.

We loved reading interesting books in our reading nook! It was very cosy and relaxing!

Our Favourite Bears

As part of our toys topic Primary 1b took a particular interest in teddy bears. We had lots of questions about teddy bears such as how are they made? What goes inside them? and How are our bears different from bears in the ‘olden days’?

We read lots of books and carried out some research online to answer our questions and couldn’t wait to bring in our own bears to show each other.

Friday started with Mrs Denholm greeting us dressed as a giant walking, talking teddy bear. We decided we were going to have a teddy bears’ picnic in the afternoon so had to get to work straight away to make some sandwiches for the occasion.

We did very well to butter our own slices of bread and add our chosen filling before cutting our sandwiches into halves. We carefully placed them into lunch bags and added our names so nobody became muddled. It was great fun and we learnt lots of new words including spreading, slicing and filling. There are definitely some budding chefs in the making in Primary 1b!

After playtime, we had circle time where we gathered together to hear stories about our favourite bears. All of the boys and girls were very respectful of each other and listened attentively to all of the interesting teddy bear names and adventures they had been on with their furry friends.

Soon after it was time to go on a bear hunt!! We put our jackets on and gathered our bears before heading outside. Some of the boys and girls remembered a story they had heard before in nursery…”We’re going on a bear hunt, We’re going to catch a big one, we’re not scared!”

Our imaginations came alive as we went outdoors. We found bear fluff, scratch marks on the playground and footprints in the woodland area. It made for some very animated and interesting discussions. We worked together as a team and found all of the teddy bears that Miss MacAtear had hid in the playground for us.

As it was a special day we were allowed to take our teddies to the lunch hall to eat with us. The boys and girls led the way and showed the teddies where to sit for our yummy lunches.

After lunch it was time for our teddy bears’ picnic. We made our way through the school to a magical garden that had suddenly appeared in the middle of the school. There were picnic blankets and grass and even some music for us to enjoy as we chatted with our bears. Mrs Denholm read us a story all about a baby bear as we tucked into our homemade sandwiches. Crumbs everywhere….but it was so much fun : )

We ended the day with a little video clip of one of our favourite teddies Paddington Bear. What a great way to spend a Friday. I wonder what our teddies will be dreaming of tonight…

Toy Story Assembly by 1C

P1c are so proud for delivering a fantastic and entertaining show to everyone! We hope everyone enjoyed it just as much as we did.

Here is a progression of lessons that we completed whilst exploring our Toys Topic! These lessons helped create our assembly show as we wanted to display all of our learning about toys from the history of toys, understanding what an old and new toy is and investigating different forces.

At the beginning, we were learning the differences between old and new toys and what the different properties were within them.

We sorted out a variety of toys under two categories: Old and New.

During our time at a toy workshop, we got to explore toys dating back as far from the 40’s!

As you know, 1C are ‘Best Selling Authors’ for writing their own Non-Fiction Book called ‘All About Toys’! We wrote about favourite toy, interviewed our Grandparents and written up a Science Investigation!

We are also the youngest Scientists as we learnt that toys have different forces. They can be pushed and pulled. Here are some different ways the children were exploring different forces. We also had to solve different scenarios and contemplate whether it was a push force or a pull.

After discovering different forces, we explored different materials that can be used to create our own favourite toy.

And now for the main event, pictures from the assembly today!

1c decided they wanted to incorporate the theme of friendship within the assembly show. Andy (played by David) was tired of playing with old toys and wanted a new toy. This hurt the feelings of his toys. However, Andy learned that no matter how different we all are, we can still be friends.

Everyone was so excited to meet the WORLDS BEST SELLING AUTHORS!

Well done to Primary One for all their hard work! You are all superstars!

Our Toy Workshop!

As our topic is ‘Toys’, we were so lucky to be involved in a Toy Workshop!

We had amazing and exciting learning experiences all about different toys. We explored old and new toys, compared toys from the past and present and reflected on different types of toys i.e. moving toys, skilled toys and building toys.

Within this treasure chest, there were old and new toys. Our job was to select any toy we liked and determine whether or not it was an ‘old’ or ‘new’ toy. We know an old toy is made from wood or metal and a new toy is made from plastic.

    #

Here we got to see a Whip and Top toy which was spinning really fast!

This toy was based upon a stunt man who in the past used to try and reach far heights over double decker buses. The faster you spun the dial, the faster the motor cycle would go!

We even had a chance to play with all the different toys from the past and present. Our favourites included the slinky, a rubix cube, an operation game, a Tetris game and lego!

At the end, of all Primary One came together to hear some tales about toys and the impact they had in the past!

Working hard in P.1a!

Literacy

We are leaning to write sentences. We took time to self-assess our writing to see where we could make improvements.

Daisy: “The J is the wrong way round.”

Carla: “I have missed a full stop.” Carla also extended her sentence to include extra details.

Ollie: “I am missing an r and I have capitals in some words.”

Jamie: ” I  could make my writing much smaller.”

Have a look at some of the improvements and amendments we have made in the pictures below.

Science

In science we have been investigating different toys and discussing what makes them go or work.  We looked at how a force can be used to push or pull something and how a force can make things move.

Achievements

Here are some things we are proud of this week……

Maya enjoyed writing a story and is proud because she wrote so many words.

Carla enjoyed sharing stories she had written at home.

Finn created his own tartan after looking at some patterns last week on Burns day. He also wrote a story at the writing table about Bingo the dog who is a character in one of our reading books.

Zara can use cubes to add to 10.

Well done Maya!

This is Carla’s writing she enjoyed doing at home!

Wow Carla!

Finn is enjoying creating texts independently.

Good adding skills Zara!

Well done P.1a

You are all working very hard!

A busy term

Primary 1 have been so busy lately we have hardly had time to stop. We took some time to reflect on our learning with a spot of yoga to relax us.

It gave us to time to think about all of the fabulous learning that has been taking place in our classroom. We have been using our sounds to stretch out tricky words to help us when we write. We are making great progress and some of our work has been put on the wall as we are very proud of it.

Mrs Denholm gives us daily targets which we try to complete before lunch time every day. We are very good at ensuring we try our best to achieve these targets and take our own photographs of what we are proud of. Here are some magic moments we have captured recently.

We enjoyed learning about Robert Burns and found some of the Scottish words quite funny. We currently have a lot of lads and lassies running around the classroom at the moment! We found out what happens at a Burns supper and enjoyed listening to the bagpipes and doing a little bit of Scottish dancing. As we had worked very hard all week our teachers brought some Scottish treats in for us to enjoy.

Our Creative Models in 1C

Primary 1c spent time creating wonderful buildings, dens and structures whilst applying their literacy and numeracy skills.

We used many amazing skills to complete this task such as:

  • Team work as we set each other tasks
  • Problem solving
  • Organisation
  • Communication as we constantly worked together effectively

In this group, 1c created a space ship! We made masks out of cardboard or paper plates so we could protect ourselves in outer space. Inside we created a steering wheel and a sat nav to navigate our direction. Also, we used plastic bags which represented the glass in windows!

Murdo, David, Kerr and Myra

In this group, we created a HAUNTED CASTLE! We measured the dimensions of all the different shapes we were using, we also measured out our windows carefully to make sure they were equal.

Matthew, Ace, Lily-Anne and Evie

This team built a duo, a rocket and a flying saucer! We used string to help hold our sign, created two signs which said Watch out and I am a Spider!

Eva, Sophia, Archie, Hishaam and Alexander

Here is a haunted volcano which has a lot of lava waiting to explode! We numbered our volcano all the way up to 100, created trapped doors and used our imagination to create a numbered steering wheel! 1C loved using the measuring tapes to not only to measure but to count too! FANTASTIC!

Amy, Gabby, Jack and Ethan

This group embraced the film Transylvania to create there spooky machine! They created monsters, bats and ghosts. Not only that, they used their time knowledge to create a clock so they knew what time it is when they travel.

Christopher, Luke, James, Alfie and Kate

Lastly, here are some ‘Spellfie’s’ (spelling with a selfie) from 1c who are demonstrating their great skills for making words through different ways!

James’s excellent ‘ue’ words!

Active learning in P.1

Gymnastics skills

We have been working hard in the gym hall.

We have been practising our gymnastics skills.

We practised walking along a line on the gym floor keeping our balance.  This helped us later on when we were moving along the benches and we didn’t topple off!

We have been learning different shapes to make when landing after a jump.

Finn is landing making a star shape.

We can move in different ways along the bench keeping our balance!

Snow Fun

We also had lots of fun in the snow last week!

We worked together to make huge snowballs!

Scottish Book Trust Vote

We all really enjoyed reading the books from the Scottish Book Trust we got in our bookbug bags this year. We watched to see which book was voted the favourite by Scottish children when it was announced…..

We were delighted to learn ‘Gorilla loves Vanilla’ by Chae Strathie was voted the favourite by Scottish children taking part in the vote. This was our favourite too!

Learning about Toys

We sorted toys  in different ways this week.

We also worked hard to draw pictures of toys for our class toy shop.

Here are some more photos of us in class this week.
