P4b Spring Poetry

Today in Literacy, we were writing poetry about Spring.  Some people included alliteration and adjectives to make the poem more interesting and descriptive.  P4b also focused on trying to make their poetry rhyme. Some rhyming structures are AABB, ABAB, ABBA or AAAA.  We also tried to include similes, onomatopoeia and thoughts and feelings.

9 beautiful rabbits eating orange carrots, Flying past were colourful parrots. 5 fluffy chicks playing in the grass, Someone picked them up and it was a little lass.

Hello from our busy learners!

Hello!

It has been a busy couple of weeks in Primary 4a! In writing, we have been building on our skills of writing a persuasive letter. This week, our persuasive letter focused on pigs! We were learning about therapy animals and came up with persuasive reasons that our school needs a therapy pig. Here are some of the reasons we came up with:

  • Therapy pigs are good for anxiety.
  • Working with therapy pigs can help to keep you relaxed.
  • Therapy pigs are easy to talk to and you can talk about learning.
  • Therapy pigs can help children to improve their learning.

We think that a therapy pig would be a great addition to our school day!

We have also been continuing with our research on the History of Newton Mearns. We have learned lots of interesting facts that we didn’t already know. For example, Newton Mearns used be a village and there were lots of small shops like grocers, butchers and bakers. A lot of people moved to Newton Mearns because of the dangers of World War Two. Other people moved to Newton Mearns many years ago, to build mansions with the money they made in the city. We also learned that Crookfur Primary was built in 1970 which makes this the 50th year!

Rectangles have been reviewing their knowledge of angles this week in Maths and have been searching for and labelling angles around the classroom. Angles are all around us! Circles have been learning to divide and multiply using 2 digit numbers. We have been solving secret equations around the room, using our UV pens! Triangles have been busy exploring the properties of 3D shapes. We have been looking for 3D shapes in our environment and building 3D shapes to learn more about their properties!

Thinking Day

In school on Friday, some children were wearing their Brownie, Cubs, Guides, Rainbows, Scouts or Beavers uniform to represent Thinking Day.  Some of the clubs are also raising money for charities and some of the charities include raising money for Australia or the Toilet Twinning charity, to help other people.

Fantastic Feelings of Awesome Art

This week in Art we used the feeling words that we wrote last time to draw pictures which would make us feel that feeling.  Some examples are:

  • Portraying feeling warm – picture of a cat infront of a fire.
  • Portraying happiness – picture of a garden with flowers and trees.
  • Portraying sadness – picture of someone getting bullied, picture of a person in the forest and there was a dead turtle and trees were cut down.
  • Portraying loneliness – picture of a person sitting on a bench by themselves whilst others were playing.
  • Portraying feeling relaxed – picture of a person walking in the park on a windy day.
  • Portraying feeling terrified – picture of a monster.
  • Portraying feeling curious – picture of the back of a person looking into the woods and there was a monster’s hand and puddle of blood.

We used bright colours for the pictures making us feel a positive feeling and darker colours and shades for the pictures making us feel a negative feeling.

Therapy Pigs for the Win Win!

This week we have been writing about Therapy Pigs.  We were taking notes about how Therapy Pigs calm people down and stop them from being nervous. They can support people with autism and anxiety by helping them get over their fears such as going outside, starting new clubs and flying.  Therapy Pigs can calm you down and distract you before a test and boost children’s confidence to make friends.  With all of our notes we wrote a persuasive letter to Mrs Shaw (Director of Education) to ask for a therapy pig in Crookfur Primary. Some of our reasons as to why Crookfur should have a therapy pig were;

  • There’s lots of space outside to keep the pigs
  • We have 2 sheds so have storage to keep their food and bedding
  • They can calm down teachers who are stressed
  • They would excite all the children
  • There’s lots of trees for shade
  • There is a very muddy woodland area for the pigs to roll around in
  • The Therapy Pigs can cheer people up in the playground

We really hope we can get a Therapy Pig! 🙂

P4’s Fantastic February

Hello!

It has been a busy month in Primary 4A, with lots of exciting learning. In PE, we have been becoming tennis superstars by learning the basics of ball skills. We have been playing partner games to learn ball control. Wimbledon, watch out!

In the topic of weather, we have been learning about how weather affects our every day lives. In groups, we made weather instruments. We made an anemometer, a wind vane, a thermometer and rain gauge. It was hard to make our instruments but we managed to build it using team work. We have also been learning about the weather in French. Aujourd’hui, il pleu et il ya du vent!

In writing, we have been learning to write a persuasive letter. We learned about the Australian wildfires and sent letters to tourists persuading them to go to other destinations like New Zealand. This has helped us in Reading, where we have been learning about non-fiction text features. We learned about different types of non-fiction texts and how we use them.

We have been doing LOTS of learning in Maths. The Rectangles have been learning about Chance and Uncertainty where they designed their own games. The Rectangles have also been reviewing addition and subtraction within 1000. In the Circles, we have been reviewing number by comparing and ordering numbers, using greater than, less than and equals to. The Triangles have been learning how to add and subtract using 10s and 100s and have done a great job of solving tricky word problems!

We also had an exciting visit from some engineers from Thales. They taught us about engineering. We got to code a robot with black lines on paper and using different colours to code how it moved. The robot followed the pattern and did moves like tornado and backwards. We also tried to make the tallest tower using marshmallows and spaghetti but it was hard because it kept falling!

Thanks for reading!
