What a quick month March has been. We became authors as we created our own story based on We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. We read our stories to the nursery children then our p6 friends. Later we designed our front cover.

Over the last few months we have been learning to explore digital
technologies and use what we have learnt to solve problems and share our ideas and thoughts.
Linking with artist such as the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian and the Spanish painter Pablo Picasso we explored how we can use digital technology to be creative. We have been mastering the skills of opening up Word Documents, interesting Word Art and inserting shapes to create artwork inspired by both famous artist. We can change the colour and texture of the shapes. All very impressive!
When learning to paint like an artist we used the website TatePaint to work on our digital painting skills. This has also helped improve our mouse control skills. https://www.tate.org.uk/kids/games-quizzes/tate-paint

We have also been exploring simple coding using Bee-Bots. We put our engineering skills to the test to build a race course for our Bee-Bot friends and successfully navigated them from start to finish.
We transferred our coding skills to the computer using the website https://beebot.terrapinlogo.com/.
This helped us work out turning left, right and moving forward and backwards.

We have been working on identifying the icons for Google Chrome so we can access website such as Chrome Music Lab. This makes learning music using digital literacy more accessible with hands-on experiments.
Have a go at home if you are brave!

Using Spheros we investigated some simple programming techniques.

Throughout February we have been learning about people who help us. We had a special visit from PC Lorraine who told us lots of information about her job. We listened well and asked questions. Some of us wanted to try on her hat and some of us decided we want to be a police officer when we grow up!

During languages week, primary 6 worked alongside us to help us learn to sign our names.

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas break. We have settled back into Primary 1 and have been busy with lots of new learning.
We loved having Primary 7 join us for some outdoor learning. They taught us how to make a shelter. We worked in groups to plan and build our shelter. We had to follow a design brief, the shelter had to stand without us holding it and it had to fit us all inside. Check them out below!

This term we will be developing our gymnastic skills. We have started to learn how to hold body shapes including straight, t, y, star and tuck.

We had great fun at our party and had a special visitor, Santa! Happy holidays to primary 1 and their families. Thank you so much for all the hard work this term and support shown from home.

A Christmas STEM challenge
We worked with primary 7 to build a sleigh for Santa using construction materials. We had to follow a design brief, the sleigh had to stand unaided, have a seat for santas helper and hold two small presents. We all successfully passed the design brief.

Thank you to all the grown ups for being such a great audience. Primary 1 worked so hard on the nativity and we are so pleased you enjoyed it. Well done primary 1!

Literacy
In literacy we continue to learn new sounds and tricky words. We have been blending sounds to read and write words.

French
In French we have been learning the names for colours and numbers. We were given instructions in French of which number of bear to colour and which colour to use.

Children in Need
We had lots of fun during children in need visiting the toy sale and taking part in activities organised by the house captains in the gym hall.

Library visit
We visited the library at the foundry to collect our bookbug bags!

Today we worked together to build our hedgehog house. We collected sticks and leaves to camouflage our house to “protect it from predators” – Cain. Thank you to all the parents who supplied us with the resources we needed. We are keeping our fingers crossed and hoping that a hedgehog finds this lovely home to hibernate in! 🤞🦔

This month we have been learning all about Autumn and the changes that happen in our environment. We discovered some animals prepare for hibernation like hedgehogs, door mice and bats. Primary 1 have been interested in learning more about hedgehogs so we have decided to build a hedgehog house. We all drew out a plan for the house and made a list of the materials that we need. We walked round the schools grounds to pick a place we think is best for our house and we have decided we will build it in the nursery community garden. Primary 1 visited the nursery to tell the children and staff all about our plans. We now have most of the resources that we need and are looking forward to building our house so check back here soon for updates!

In Art, we have been learning about warm and cool colours. We used cool colours to create a spooky halloween night sky then black card to make a haunted house.

In Science we had lots of fun observing chemical reactions. We mixed bicarbonate soda and vinegar and it made our pumpkin sick!
