November Learning

Literacy
In literacy we continue to learn new sounds and tricky words. We have been blending sounds to read and write words.

French
In French we have been learning the names for colours and numbers. We were given instructions in French of which number of bear to colour and which colour to use.

Children in Need
We had lots of fun during children in need visiting the toy sale and taking part in activities organised by the house captains in the gym hall.

Library visit
We visited the library at the foundry to collect our bookbug bags!

Hedgehog house

Today we worked together to build our hedgehog house. We collected sticks and leaves to camouflage our house to “protect it from predators” – Cain. Thank you to all the parents who supplied us with the resources we needed. We are keeping our fingers crossed and hoping that a hedgehog finds this lovely home to hibernate in! 🤞🦔

October in P1/2

This month we have been learning all about Autumn and the changes that happen in our environment. We discovered some animals prepare for hibernation like hedgehogs, door mice and bats. Primary 1 have been interested in learning more about hedgehogs so we have decided to build a hedgehog house. We all drew out a plan for the house and made a list of the materials that we need. We walked round the schools grounds to pick a place we think is best for our house and we have decided we will build it in the nursery community garden. Primary 1 visited the nursery to tell the children and staff all about our plans. We now have most of the resources that we need and are looking forward to building our house so check back here soon for updates!

In Art, we have been learning about warm and cool colours. We used cool colours to create a spooky halloween night sky then black card to make a haunted house.

In Science we had lots of fun observing chemical reactions. We mixed bicarbonate soda and vinegar and it made our pumpkin sick!

August

Hi everyone, our class blog is used to share photos and information about what is happening in Primary 1. At the moment I am unable to share photographs of pupils faces but please check back soon for these.

I am so proud everyone in p1.2 as they have settled well and continue to embrace their new school routine.

Learning in Primary 1 is a balance between adult initiated and child led experiences. The children learn new skills during direct teaching time with Miss Burnett. They have set targets to complete but are free to choose the order and are responsible for managing their time. In the classroom they have several areas such as Maths, Literacy, Expressive Arts, Construction, Fine Motor, Loose Parts and Role Play to explore. The children can interact with the resources in these areas creatively and extend their learning.

Here are some photos of what has been happening over the last few weeks.

We have been learning about numbers to 10, counting forwards and backwards. Pupils have been counting given amounts and exploring the formation of numbers.

This week we started learning sounds. We will usually teach three sounds a week, on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.  The sounds for the week all get stuck in on the Monday and your child can complete their homework over the course of the week, as each sound is taught. Please return the folders on a Thursday.  We discuss the letter name and the sound it makes and then learn a song to go with the sound. We use a story to help us identify words with the sound we are learning. In class, there are lots of opportunities to practise the formation of the taught sound and activities to identify objects that have the sound we are learning.

Welcome!

Welcome to Primary 1/2!

Wednesday is going to be our Learning Outdoors day. We will be outside for most of the day. Children can come to school wearing comfortable trousers, such as leggings or jogging bottoms, with their school polo shirt and school jumper. We kindly ask that children also bring a spare change of clothes and socks in their school bag just in case we have a wet or muddy day. It is helpful to have these items clearly labelled with your child’s name. We would be grateful if you could provide welly boots for your child to keep in school. We have waterproofs that can be worn but if you have your own, you are welcome to send these in to be kept in school. As it is getting colder, please make sure your child has a suitable jacket with them which can be worn under the waterproofs if required.

Thursday will be our P.E. day. Children can come to school wearing their kit of black leggings or shorts and white/blue polo shirt to save them having to change in school. Please note, jewellery must not be worn.

On Fridays we will be learning tricky words. It is helpful for children to bring in a tub for these to be handed out to allow practise at home.

Thank you for your support. We are looking forward to a fantastic year in Primary 1!
