May in Primary 1/1

Primary 1/1 have had a busy month.

In P.E. we have been working hard on our athletics skills. We have practised the relay race, running and jumping over hurdles and throwing skills.

Well done to everyone for taking part in Sports’ Day. A day full of sunshine, sports and team spirit!

In Maths we have been learning how to use tally marks. We all created our own tally charts and gathered information from each other. Everyone recorded their tally marks and could give a total for each option. We can all identify the most and least popular choice.

We have been learning all about different environments. Rennie the Park Ranger came for a visit and told us all about his job at Dams to Darnley Country Park. He showed us pictures of different wildlife found in the park and told us lots of interesting facts! Here are some we remembered:

“If we didn’t have house spiders, we would be up to our knees in maggots!”

Rennie also brought in some different things found in the park. He had a badger skull and a bat!

He told us how important it is to pick up our litter as it can be harmful to nature. We have been recycling and re-using our snack wrappers in our Art area.

We have had Miss Wu, our Mandarin teacher, in to help us learn numbers, animals and colours. We have enjoyed joining in with Mandarin songs and trying to write in Mandarin.

The start of a new term🌼

Primary 1.1 have been learning all about data handling.

We read Goldilocks and the Three Bears and discussed the different things Goldilocks tried out. Then we sorted things into categories like colour, size and object🥣🪑🥄.

This week we have also been learning about pictograms. We all drew our favourite animal and coloured our favourite colour. These were added to our pictogram which we helped to label. Lots of us could pick out which was the most/least popular!

People Who Help Us

We have been learning all about people who help us in our community. Last month, we enjoyed a visit from the Fire Service and this month we were so lucky to have PC Lorraine come to visit us to tell us all about her job in the Police.

We learned all about the different parts of her uniform.

We learned the names of different equipment the police use and what they are used for.

We all got a chance to try on the police hat!

We are excited to learn who else can help us!

Visit from Barrhead Fire Station

On Thursday we had a very exciting visit from the firefighters at Barrhead Fire Station.

They came into our class and answered some questions we had. We learned all about different jobs they do, why they have to wear their uniform and helmet, and how they know they need to go out to an emergency.

We were all very lucky to have a shot at using the hose. It was super heavy!

We even got to go inside the fire engine. We spotted a little rubber duck firefighter!

Thank you so much to the staff at Barrhead Fire Station for giving your time to help Primary 1 learn more about your very important job!

December

What a busy month for Primary 1!

This month, we all worked hard to create our very own clay tealight holder. We painted these and added some sparkle. The class were proud to sell these at the Christmas fair.

Primary 1 and 2 worked so hard at rehearsing songs and dances for our Nativity. Thank you to all who made it along. I am so proud of all of the children, what a super performance!

Primary 7 came to help Primary 1 solve a design problem. Santa’s Sleigh had broken down and the class had to plan, design and build a new sleigh that would fit Santa’s helper and 2 small gifts. All of the groups managed this. Well done!

Have a wonderful Christmas break and all the best for 2024!

November

November has been packed with so many new experiences. A visit to the Foundry Library, Children in Need Day and making soup for St. Andrew’s Day!🌟

Muddy Movers:

We have loved checking in on our hedgehog house, although no sign of any visitors!🦔

We had so much fun in the rain, exploring capacity through filling up different containers with mud and water. Lots of us enjoyed transferring water from one puddle to another area to make our own puddles.💦

Some of us worked really well as a team to build a structure we could go under and over. We decided a bridge was best for this and we used the crates and a pallet.🌉

For World Book Week, we were invited to the library at The Foundry. We listened to a story and got our Book Bug bags home.📚

For Children in Need Day, we got to wear our own clothes/jammies! The Primary 7s had set up some excellent activities in the hall and then we had a good look around the toy and book sale.🐻💛

We learned how to cut different vegetables and we all added these into the pot to make soup. It turned out yummy!🥕🥬🥣

We have also been working very hard to rehearse for our Nativity, we can’t wait to show you!🎄

Well done Primary 1/1!

October🎃

We have been learning all about Autumn. We have been going on walks around the school grounds to spot signs of Autumn. In the Muddy Movers Area we have been looking for a good spot to build a hedgehog house.

Primary 1 have further explored the Seek app on the iPad in the Muddy Movers area. We discovered so many amazing plants we have right outside and also some creatures we find each week at Muddy Movers. Check it out below!

In Literacy we were learning about sequencing and writing our own instructions. We linked this with how to carve a pumpkin. In class, we followed the instructions we had written to tell Miss Payne the steps of carving🪛.  We then had a “Puking Pumpkin” experiment where we added bicarbonate of soda, food colouring and white vinegar to a pumpkin. We saw a chemical reaction and identified that when mixing these things together it creates a foam!🎃🧪

We were lucky to have a pantomime come to the school. We enjoyed watching Snow White🎭.

A Very Busy September😀

Primary 1/1 have been working very hard this month. We have learned new sounds, tricky words and had lots of number work🔡🔢.

On our outdoor day🌿, we have had a focus on measure and 2D shape📏🔺. We used big chalk to draw different sized lines outside and we measured them using cubes and linking elephants. We were then able to discuss who had the longest and shortest lines and which lines were longer or shorter than others.

We continued to explore this inside when we found the Giant’s footprint from Jack and the Beanstalk🦶🏼🌱. We measured, again, with cubes and linking elephants.

Then we had the challenge of trying to find things longer or shorter than the Giant’s footprint.

We have also been having a look at 2D shapes. We went on a shape hunt around our playground and found so many shapes🔎. Well done Primary 1!

Thank you to those of you who managed to come along to our Open Afternoon😊. The class thoroughly enjoyed showing you all of their work they had been doing and having you there to support their learning.

The class continued to explore measure and worked with each other to draw around each other’s feet to measure using cubes. They also designed their own beanstalks and put the correct number of magic beans onto each leaf.

In Science, we have been looking at living things🐌💐. Last week we used an app on the iPad called ‘Seek.’ We explored the upper playground for flowers and took pictures of these. The app then told us which flower families these belonged to and gave us some information about which season these flowers grow best in. We can’t wait to keep exploring this app.

We have started to brush our teeth in class🦷. We have discussed the importance of having healthy teeth and all of the class brushed their teeth very well! This is the song we use: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCio_xVlgQ0

Well done for a super September Primary 1/1. I am excited to see what we learn in October🍂.
