Welcome Primary 4/2

Welcome to a new school year in Primary 4!

I am thrilled to be starting this learning journey together and I can’t wait to share all the wonderful topics, skills and activities we will be exploring throughout the year!

As we are still waiting on the return of all digital consent forms, pupils’ faces have been covered in this post for privacy reasons.

Our P4s have made a fantastic start to the year and have already been working hard to brighten up their classroom with their art and work. Here’s a little preview until our first open afternoon on Tuesday 16th September.

Setting Targets!

The children made targets to work toward within their literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing, which are now proudly displayed in class.

Literacy! Book Tasting and Grammar Enthusiasts

In literacy, Primary 4 have been hard at work developing their grammar and reading skills. So far, they have been focusing on proper nouns, pronouns, and adjectives, making sure to set out their work neatly and carefully in their jotters.

Alongside grammar, the class took part in our exciting book tasting reading café. The children ‘stamped’ five different books, wrote a short review of each, and then chose a favourite to keep in their tray for quiet reading time. It was a brilliant way to explore new titles, front covers, genres and spark enthusiasm for reading! Fantastic work P4!

STEM Spotlight: Spaghetti and Marshmallow Towers

Primary 4 took on an exciting STEM challenge – designing and building towers using only spaghetti and marshmallows! Working in groups, the children experimented with different shapes and structures to create towers that were not only the tallest but also the strongest. This encouraged collaboration, problem-solving, and plenty of creative thinking. Pupils shared ideas and tested out strategies together. It was fantastic to see them preserve when towers wobbled or collapsed and celebrate when their designs stood tall and sturdy!

IDL: Investigating the Human Body

We have started our first Interdisciplinary Learning (IDL) topic of the year: The Human Body. The children amazed me with the knowledge they already had and contributed lots of fantastic ideas to our class discussions. Together, the class came up with ideas and questions they would like to explore, giving them ownership of the direction of their learning.

To bring our topic to life, the class also had fun piecing together the bones of the skeleton-testing their memory from class discussion. Children had fun creating their very own skeleton artwork using black paper, colourful straws and googly eyes. The results were both creative and eye-catching. It was lovely to see how each piece of work was unique.

It’s been wonderful to see such enthusiasm and curiosity from the class already. We are excited to continue exploring the human body and discovering even more together!

Numeracy: Exploring Expressions and number patterns

In Numeracy, Primary 4 have begun their new topics on expressions and equations as well as number processes. The children have been working very hard, listening carefully during teacher input, and applying their learning with focus and enthusiasm.

So far, the children have been investigating number patterns and sequences, exploring place value, and comparing numbers to decide which are greater than, less than and equal to each other. It’s been great to see how quickly they are developing confidence with these concepts!

Heartstart Heros!

Children have been working carefully to perfect their recovery position and choking first aid through their Heartstart training. Discussing the risk and safety factors surrounding these.

It has been fantastic to see the children grow close to one another and grow independently as learners! Keep it up P4!
