The Beginning of Primary 1/1

Primary 1/1 have had a busy start to the year! Everyone is working well at learning the rules and routines in the classroom and are settling in nicely. We take responsibility for our learning by choosing when to complete our targets and taking off our magnets each time we finish a piece of work. 🌟

This week we started class jobs and everyone is working hard to do the job they have. The class enjoy earning house points for this and other great work they are doing. 👏🏻

As a class we read ‘The Colour Monster,’ to explore emotions and we now have a well-being check-in that the class can use at any point of each day.🌈

In P.E. we have been working on our fitness. The first focus we have is balance and the class have worked well at balancing on different parts of the body and balancing objects like beanbags on themselves.🤸🏻‍♀️

The class have enjoyed our two outdoor days so far. We have been working with Mrs Brown outside for Maths and practising writing numbers in the playground with chalk. We used the big ten frame to count and show amounts and got into groups of different numbers.🌿

We are enjoying being outside in the afternoon for Muddy Movers. The past two weeks there have been lots of creatures we have discovered and different outdoor equipment like mud kitchen tools and crates. We have continued our practise of balancing when using the crates.

In Maths we have been working with numbers to 10. We have been recognising numbers, writing them using number formation rhymes and counting out amounts.

Here are some activities we have liked:

Over the past two weeks we have learned the sounds s, a, t, i, p and n and have explored these through classroom areas and at targets with Miss Payne. We are having lots of practise with letter formation in different ways around the room and we are enjoying learning the songs and actions for each sound.🔈

We have also been working hard at learning our tricky words. So far, we have learned the words: I, the, he and she. We are working on our word recognition with these and trying to spot them in different areas around the room.

Here are some activities we have enjoyed:

In Art, we learned about the work of Jackson Pollock and discussed some of his pieces of art. We talked about his ways of creating art and tried these for ourselves. Lots of fun and lots of mess!🖌🎨

We have started to learn French. The class enjoyed meeting Camembear and saying ‘Bonjour,’ to him. We learned how to say ‘My name is…’ and everyone introduced themselves to Camembear. Well done to everyone for having a go!🇫🇷

In our class we have explored the UNCRC Rights of the Child. The class have picked 3 rights that they think are particularly important for them in school. The class picked:

  • Adults must do what’s best for me.
  • I have the right to be listened to, and taken seriously.
  • I have the right to relax and play.

These will be displayed in the classroom.

Keep up the great work Primary 1, I am very proud at how well you are all settling in!

Useful Information

Welcome to Primary 1/1!

Monday will be our P.E. day. Children can come to school wearing their kit of black leggings or shorts and white/blue polo shirt to save them having to change in school. Please note, jewellery must not be worn.

Tuesday is going to be our Learning Outdoors day, starting on Tuesday 23rd August. We will be outside for most of the day. Children can come to school wearing comfortable trousers, such as leggings or jogging bottoms, with their school polo shirt and school jumper. We kindly ask that children also bring a spare change of clothes and socks in their school bag just in case we have a wet or muddy day. It is helpful to have these items clearly labelled with your child’s name. We would be grateful if you could provide welly boots for your child to keep in school. We have waterproofs that can be worn but if you have your own, you are welcome to send these in to be kept in school. As it is getting colder, please make sure your child has a suitable jacket with them which can be worn under the waterproofs if required.

On Fridays we will be learning tricky words. It is helpful for children to bring in a tub for these to be handed out to allow practise at home.

Thank you for your support. We are looking forward to a fantastic year in Primary 1!
