Mini beast hunting and signs of spring 🐝🐞🕷🌱

Over the last few weeks we have been out looking for signs of spring and enjoying some mini beast hunting.

We found buds on trees, new leaves opening up and pine cones and flowers beginning to grow. Spring is definitely here 🌱☀️

On our first mini beast hunt we had a checklist to record what we found.

On our second mini beast hunt we really enjoyed using the new magnifying view finders to get a closer look at the bugs we found 🔎🐜🐝🐞🕷🦟🔍 We also learned that our new class mate, Myles, is an excellent bug hunter. He found lots of mini beasts and bravely scooped up a dead bee for us all to have a closer look at 🐝

This week we went out again, on the children’s request to bug hunt using the view finders, but this time we had to draw what we found.  Adam also found a giant number 10 outside! 👏👍

Living Things 🌱🌳🌷

We have been learning about living and non-living things.

We can identify living things:

Cara – spider

Orla – worm

Blair – tree

Eva – flower

We can identify non-living things:

Josh – aeroplane

Sean – chair

Lucas – door

Robyn – table

We learned the name for each part of the plant and what job they do to help the plant grow and live. We decided to grow broad beans so we could see the roots and shoot growing before we planted them in soil.

After two weeks we could see the roots and shoots starting to grow.

So then we took our beans outside to plant into soil.

I hope all your  broad beans are being well looked after and growing tall. 🌱🌞

⚖📏Measure📏⚖

Over the last few weeks we have been exploring the concept of measure.  We have experimented with everyday items as units of measure to investigate and compare sizes and amounts in the environment.  We then shared our findings with our friends.

We started with the skills of measuring length using our feet and our hands. It can be tricky using your feet to measure and not fall over.

We estimated how long an object was  and then measured it using cubes, straws and paperclips. Using a selection of loose parts we also created towers and arranged them from the shortest to the tallest.

We can now use language such as:

•  “long/longer” and “short/shorter”.

•  “tall/taller” and “small/ smaller”.

We investigated the concept of weight using non-standard units such as pegs, stones, clips and cubes.  We used  a simple 2-pan balance to weigh items and describe which classroom objects  are heavier, lighter or  about the same weight. We  can now place classroom objects in order according to their weight.

Finally we explored the concept of volume by  filling containers with liquids and solids such as water, cubes and sand. we can confidently describe capacity using the words  full, empty, nearly empty, nearly full and half full.

💻⌨ Technology ⌨💻

During our visits to the Digi Space we have been logging on to a desktop computer using our username and password.  We know that a password is private and we should only share it with people we trust.

We can now identify the icons for Chrome, Microsoft Word, close, save and Microsoft Outlook.

We are continuing to master the skills of highlighting text to change the colour, font and size. On a Friday we practise typing  our new tricky words, sometimes we type a sentence using them. We know that we use the Caps Lock key to make a capital letter and try to remember a space between our words using the space bar.

On a Friday our digital leaders have been helping us learn the skill of coding.  When we were back in class we created an obstacle course using blocks. We then programmed the Blue-bot to move around the course and try not to bump into the bricks.  We used direction such as forward, backwards, left and right turn.

World Book Day 2022

What a fun filled, exciting day we had to celebrate World Book Day. 📚

We really enjoyed showing off our fabulous costumes and sharing our favourite books.

Half the class went to visit a Primary 5 classroom where the P5 children read to P1. The other half of our class stayed in our classroom  and some of P5 came to visit and read to us.

We decorated bunting with our favourite characters and stories.

We absolutely loved the ‘Where’s Wally?’ scavenger hunt organised by Miss Rice.

We enjoyed reading ‘This is a Dog’ by Ross Collins. We all read along, laughted out loud at the silly dog and decided to become an author and illustrator for another page to be added to this wonderful book. 📚🐶

To finish off a fantastic day, we joined the whole school outside in the big playground. We danced, sang, paraded our costumes and favourite books to everyone and clapped and cheered while watching each of the other classes parade.

February 2022

This month we started toothbrushing after lunch every day. We brush for 2 minutes along to our toothbrushing song.

We have been learning to add and subtract within 10 and we have explored this using various resources in our classroom.

We have been working on letter formation, learning the alphabet and using our phonics knowledge to spell.

In writing, we have been giving story mapping a go! This helps us build on story sequencing skills, develop detailed drawings and retell a story.

We have also been learning about the artists and designers Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Friedensreich Hundertwasser. We used their work to inspire our own art.

Finally, we have been learning about our local area. The children were very excited when  talking about their own houses and trying to remember their address that we decided design and build our own dream home.

Burns Day Celebrations

Today we listened carefully to information about Robert Burns. We had to find the missing word to each sentence.

Then we listened to some of Robert Burns songs and poems. We enjoyed working out what the lyrics at the start of ‘To a Mouse’ meant and we joined in Auld Lang Syne.

After that we joined in some Scottish dancing and learned the Scottish songs ‘Three Craws’ and ‘Heid, Shooders, Knaps and Taes.’

We finished off our celebrations with a tasty piece of Scottish shortbread.

I hope you all enjoy a Burns Night feast this evening. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Happy New Year!

It was lovely welcoming all the children back today after the Christmas holidays. I hope we all have a happy  and healthy 2022 ❤️

We all tried really hard to use our phonics knowledge to write our own holiday news today. Great work Primary One! 🌟🌟🌟

Then we continued exploring numbers up to 20 in Numeracy. It was tricky putting 4 or 5 numbers in order forwards and backwards.

After lunch we loved exploring the ice and frost outside. But our fingers got cold quite quickly!

🎄🎅 Christmas 2021 🎅🎄

We had a fantastic day watching a pantomime in the morning and having  our Christmas party in the afternoon. As we have been such a great class Santa came to visit us. He enjoyed our singing.
