Robert Burns

We are learning about Robert Burns and Scotland, here are some comments about our learning so far…

’He writes poems’ Ella

’Robert Burns was born in Alloway’ Ada

’There is a famous song by him’ Elliot

’People eat a Burns supper’ Millie

’He was born on 25th January and that is Burns day’ Lewis

In  class today we learned that often people dance at a Burns supper and tartan is worn. We used paper to create our own tartan. Have a look at them below,

We also used Microsoft Word to create a tartan. The pupils inserted a rectangle shape and learned how to copy and paste so they could produce a pattern. We used shape fill to change the colour.

Physical Education

This term in PE we will be focusing on gymnastics. Today we learned to make some body shapes, straight, y, t, star, tuck, pike, straddle and bridge. Once we were confident making these shapes, we balanced across the bench, pausing to hold a shape. At the end of the bench we jumped onto the mat and finished our routine by making a final body shape. Over the rest of the term we will continue to develop our gymnastic skills

ICT

Primary 2 are enjoying going to the ICT suite on a Thursday and have been working very hard to develop their skills using the computer.  We have been using Microsoft Word and have learned how to type our names, change the font, colour and size. We have also been learning how  to insert shapes to create pictures.  Below are some pictures of the houses and Christmas trees we have made using 2D shapes.

Our learning so far…

In Numeracy, we have been learning about shapes. We can name 2D shapes like square, rectangle, pentagon, hexagon and octagon and describe their properties. We enjoyed using 2D shapes to create some pictures.

We have also been learning about 3D shapes and can identify cubes, cuboids, cylinders, pyramids and spheres.  We had great fun using cocktail sticks and play dough to build some of the 3D shapes.

In Literacy, we have been learning to read and spell our tricky words and new phonics sounds. We do this by taking part in active spelling activities and some of these seen in the pictures below are:

  • Play dough spelling
  • Scrabble letters
  • Beanbag throw

We have been loving going to the gym hall on a Thursday afternoon to do P.E. Over the last few weeks we have been developing our dribbling and throwing and catching skills using both footballs and basketballs.

Welcome to Primary 2

It has been lovely having everyone back at school and we have loved catching up with our friends.  The class have been superstars and have settled well into our routines.

Here is a little snapshot of our learning so far:

We have been busy reading the story Jim and the Beanstalk and were very lucky to have a special delivery arrive in the classroom. We received a letter and footprint from the Giant asking us to help him out.
We had to use our measuring skills to measure his footprint to make him a new pair of shoes. We used cubes to do this and discovered his footprint was 18 cubes long.

We decided that we wanted to know how much bigger the giants footprint was than our own so we worked with a partner to draw around our feet and used cubes to measure our footprints.

In Literacy, we have been learning the sh and ch sound and have been excellent at identifying and spelling words with these sounds. Test us at home by asking for some ch and sh words. We have also been working on forming lower and uppercase letters and have enjoyed doing this using paint.
e.g. Aa, Bb, Cc.

This week in Science we will be learning about the Water Cycle. Watch the video to find out more.

Useful information:

P.E is on a Thursday

Muddy Movers is on  a Monday, please provide welly boots if possible.

Homework is issued on a Monday and will be collected on a Friday. Reading homework should be completed every night.

Farewell to Primary 1

It has been a fantastic year for our Primary 1s.  They made a great start to their time in Cross Arthurlie and despite a period of learning from home, they’ve shown resilience and confidence by bouncing back.

Miss Payne made this video to celebrate Primary 1/1.  We hope you enjoy it:

May and June in Primary 1/1🌻☀️

In May, we were learning all about People who Help Us. We worked together to come up with some questions to ask the Emergency Services🚨. The class loved hearing the answers from the Fire Service and Paramedic and even had the chance to look at and try on a real fire fighter’s helmet👩🏽‍🚒.

The class enjoyed P.E. outside and playing different ball games in groups⚽️.

May and June have been so busy and we have been working very hard! See the next post for Sports’ Day🏅!
