Solo Talks

This month we have been busy preparing for our class solo talks. We discussed oral presentation features including speaking in a loud and clear voice, making eye contact, having a clear introduction and including relevant information. We also discussed the features of a good audience such as good listening skills and being able to ask and answer questions.

Some solo talk topics covered hobbies, favourite holidays, famous people, special family members, countries, history and more. All the solo talks were well presented using flash cards, posters, Google slides, photographs and pictures and were enjoyed by all. 🎤🗣

The Twits

Last term our class novel was The Twits. For those of you who don’t know, The Twits is written by Roald Dahl and features Mr. and Mrs. Twit, a spiteful, lazy unkempt couple who continuously play nasty jokes on each other to amuse themselves, and exercise their wickedness on their monkeys.

We absolutely loved reading the novel and enjoyed using jam boards at the end of each lesson to record our predictions for the following week. We were always very eager to read on to find out what was going to happen as the story developed and enjoyed leaving the story on a cliff hanger each week.

We used Literacy, ICT, Drama and Art and Design to link our learning with the Twits. We wrote poems, instructions, comic strips, menus and more. We used materials to recreate Mr Twit’s disgusting beard and we used our drama skills to reenact parts of the story. At the end of the novel we worked in teams to complete a Twits quiz. Each team scored very highly.

We are looking forward to reading another Roald Dahl novel this term. 📚❤️

World Book Day

At the start of the month we celebrated World Book Day. World Book Day is a registered charity on a mission to give every child and young person a book of their own. It’s also a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) it’s a celebration of reading.

We spent our day doing a range of reading activities and throughly enjoyed it.

We took part in a quiz where we had to identify books based on a section of their front covers. Bonus points were given if we knew the author of the books.

We completed a booklet all about our favourite book in which we wrote diary entries, author interviews, summaries, character profiles, word searches and more.

We enjoyed taking part in a Where’s Wally scavenger hunt in our school corridors.

We worked in pairs and used drama skills to perform a scene from a book which the rest of the class had to guess.

We also enjoyed choosing a story to be read by another teacher in the school. 📚📖🎉

Burns Day

On Wednesday we celebrated Burns Day. Five years after Robert Burns died, a group of his friends got together to remember him and his poetry. The tradition became established and now, every year on his birthday, 25th January, Scots all round the world celebrate Burns Night with a Burns Supper.

We had a Burns themed morning in class where we took part in all things Robert Burns.

Activity 1: We read the story of Robert Burns and his life. Our task was to sequence the story by cutting out each sentence and putting it in the correct order.

Activity 2: We followed step by step instructions to draw a portrait of Robert Burns.

Activity 3: We used the chrome books to research a typical Burns supper menu and created our own.

Activity 4: We translated Scots words to English.

We listened to Auld Lang Syne and enjoyed singing along. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🧆🎶

Rainforest topic

As part of our rainforest topic we wanted to learn more about the animals found in the rainforest. We explored what animals are found in each layer and chose to focus on six of them; jaguar, potoo, scarlet macaw, sloth, red eyed tree frog and the emerald tree boa. We used the internet and books to research information about each animal, their diet, habitat, appearance, character and fun facts. We organised and presented all of this information in a colourful fact file using headings, subheadings, text boxes, bullet points and pictures.

We also wrote acrostic poems describing the rainforest. Zoom into our completed rainforest wall display to have a read at some of our poems and to look at our triaramas.  (ARTICLE 28)
