Solo talks

This month we have been busy preparing for our class solo talks. We discussed oral presentation features including a loud and clear voice, eye contact, a clear introduction and relevant information. We also discussed the features of a good audience including good listening skills and being able to ask questions.

Some solo talk topics covered pets and animals, favourite footballers/teams, special family members, countries, history and more.

All the solo talks were well presented using flash cards, posters, Google slides, photographs and pictures and were enjoyed by all.

World book day

Last week we celebrated World Book Day. World Book Day is a registered charity on a mission to give every child and young person a book of their own. Itโ€™s also aย celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) itโ€™s a celebration of reading.

We spent our day doing a range of reading activities and throughly enjoyed it.

We took part in a quiz where we had to identify books based on a section of their front covers. Bonus points were given if we knew the author of the books.

We completed a booklet all about our favourite book in which we wrote diary entries, author interviews, summaries, character profiles, word searches and more.

We enjoyed taking part in a Whereโ€™s Wally scavenger hunt in our school corridors.

We worked in pairs and used drama skills to perform a scene from a book which the rest of the class had to guess.

Our most favourite part of the day was sharing a story with the nursery children. We visited the nursery in small groups and read a book to the nursery children. It was great!

Some of us dressed up as book characters whilst others brought in a prop or their favourite book. We got to show these off during our costume parade in the playground.

Have a look at some of the pictures from our day below. We hope your day was as fun as ours!๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ“–๐ŸŽ‰

Burns Day

On Tuesday we celebrated Burns Day. Five years after Robert Burns died, a group of his friends got together to remember him and his poetry. The tradition became established and now, every year on his birthday, 25th January, Scots all round the world celebrate Burns Night with a Burns Supper.

We had a Burns themed afternoon in class where we took part in all things Robert Burns.
Activity 1: We read the story of Robert Burns and his life. Our task was to sequence the story by cutting out each sentence and putting it in the correct order.
Activity 2: We followed step by step instructions to draw a portrait of Robert Burns.
Activity 3: We used the chrome books to research a typical Burns supper menu and created our own.
Activity 4: We translated Scots words to English.
We listened to Auld Lang Syne and practised some Scottish country dancing. ๐Ÿ‘ฏโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ๐Ÿง†๐Ÿฝ๐ŸŽถ

Scotland tourist leaflets

Last term our topic was Scotland. We researched information about famous land marks and tourist attractions in Scotland and created leaflets to advertise the places.

Scotland is full of amazing things to see and visit but we had to narrow our choices down. The places we chose to research were Edinburgh Castle, River Tay, Holyrood Palace, Loch Ness, Wallace Monument, Ben Nevis and Arthurโ€™s Seat.

As part of our success criteria we had to ensure we included headings, subheadings, text boxes, bullet points and wrote short, key information. Have a read at our Scotland tourist guides below.

Trapped in a snow globe

Following on from our blog post a couple of weeks ago, we have finished and displayed our winter snow globe art and writing and love how this turned out!
We used our imagination to picture ourselves trapped in a snow globe and wrote all about how we got trapped inside, what we could sense, how we felt and how we managed to escape. We created snow globe art to go along with it. Have a read belowโ„๏ธโ›„๏ธ๐ŸŒจ

Bonfire Night

To celebrate Guy Fawkes night in school, we read the story of Guy Fawkes and discussed why we have bonfire night celebrations in the UK. Next we listened to the sounds of fireworks and looked at pictures of firework displays from around the world. We used this to help us write a descriptive poem about fireworks. In our poems we used similes, onomatopoeia and alliteration. We also used multicoloured oil pastels to create fireworks art. ๐ŸŽ‡๐Ÿงจ๐ŸŽ†

Halloween Fun

We had a fun week filled with lots of Halloween themed lessons and activities๐Ÿ‘ป๐ŸŽƒ

We discussed Pablo Picasso and his style of art, particularly his portraits. We used different coloured paper to cut out and make Picasso monsters. ๐Ÿ‘น๐Ÿ˜ˆ

We wrote descriptive spooky stories and enjoyed reading these aloud to the class with the lights switched off and some spooky background sounds. ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ˜ฑ

On the afternoon of our Halloween party we changed into fabulous costumes and loved posing for pictures. ๐Ÿ‘ฏ

We played Booโ€™ling, designed a scratch mask, watched a spooky movie with snacks and had a mummy toilet roll competition.๐ŸŽณ๐ŸŽญ

Animal family poems

We have been learning about similes. A simile is used to compare things using the words โ€˜asโ€™ or โ€˜likeโ€™. We wrote animal family poems where we compared our family members to animals.

We used symmetry skills to draw the other half of an animal photo. This was quite challenging! We used a mirror to study the other half of the face first. Next we drew the outline of the animal. After that we added in the smaller details and coloured the animal using pastels. We are extremely impressed by how well our animal drawings turned out. You canโ€™t tell some of them are drawings, they look like real photographs!๐Ÿคฉย We love how our writing wall turned out. Zoom into have a read at our poems.
