A promise to our planet

After learning about COP 26 and the events which took place in Glasgow around climate change, we discussed the changes we could make to our day to day lives to reduce our carbon footprint. Bonfire Night

To celebrate Guy Fawkes night in school, we read the story of Guy Fawkes and discussed why we have bonfire night celebrations in the UK. Next we listened to the sounds of fireworks and looked at pictures of firework displays from around the world. We used this to help us write a descriptive poem about fireworks. In our poems we used similes, onomatopoeia and alliteration. We also used multicoloured oil pastels to create fireworks art. πŸŽ‡πŸ§¨πŸŽ†

Halloween stem challenge

We worked in pairs to complete a Halloween STEM challenge. Our challenge was to use the resources provided to make a bone bridge that was strong enough to carry a spider (a toy spider of course!)

We used straws, lollipop sticks, string, pipe cleaners, cotton buds and sellotape.Β First we designed and drew a picture of our bridge on paper. Next we used the materials to build our bridge. This was challenging! After that we presented our bone bridge to the class and discussed our strategies.

Well done to Alesha and Kayla who managed to make a bridge strong enough to hold the spider. Check out some pictures of our stem challenge below. πŸ•·πŸŒ‰

Halloween Fun

We had a fun week filled with lots of Halloween themed lessons and activitiesπŸ‘»πŸŽƒ

We discussed Pablo Picasso and his style of art, particularly his portraits. We used different coloured paper to cut out and make Picasso monsters. πŸ‘ΉπŸ˜ˆ

We wrote descriptive spooky stories and enjoyed reading these aloud to the class with the lights switched off and some spooky background sounds. πŸ“šπŸ˜±

On the afternoon of our Halloween party we changed into fabulous costumes and loved posing for pictures. πŸ‘―

We played Boo’ling, designed a scratch mask, watched a spooky movie with snacks and had a mummy toilet roll competition.🎳🎭

COP 26

This week we learned about COP 26. COP 26 is an important meeting all about taking action against climate change. Over the next two weeks, more than 200 world leaders will meet for an event, known as COP26, to discuss climate change. COP26 will take place at the Scottish Events Campus (SEC) in Glasgow, and will be the biggest meeting of world leaders that the UK has ever hosted!

We read a story called The Trouble with Dragons. The story is about a world which is populated by beastly dragons who don’t care about how much they pollute the oceans, chop down the trees, gobble up all the food and use everything up without stopping to think. We worked in groups to think of advice to give to the dragons to help them save their world before it is too late.🌍πŸ”₯🌞

Rainforest animal factfiles

As part of our rainforest topic we wanted to learn more about the animals found in the rainforest. We explored what animals are found in each layer and chose to focus on six of them; jaguar, potoo, scarlet macaw, sloth, red eyed tree frog and the emerald tree boa. We used the internet and books to research information about each animal, their diet, habitat, appearance, character and fun facts. We organised and presented all of this information in a colourful fact file using headings, subheadings, text boxes, bullet points and pictures. πŸ†πŸ¦₯🦜🐍🐸

We also wrote acrostic poems describing the rainforest. Zoom into our wall display to have a read at some of our poems.

Animal family poems

We have been learning about similes. A simile is used to compare things using the words β€˜as’ or β€˜like’. We wrote animal family poems where we compared our family members to animals.

We used symmetry skills to draw the other half of an animal photo. This was quite challenging! We used a mirror to study the other half of the face first. Next we drew the outline of the animal. After that we added in the smaller details and coloured the animal using pastels. We are extremely impressed by how well our animal drawings turned out. You can’t tell some of them are drawings, they look like real photographs!🀩 We love how our writing wall turned out. Zoom into have a read at our poems.
