Robert Burns Celebrations

To celebrate the life of Robert Burns we decided to have a Scottish party.

We tasted Scottish food; haggis needs and tattles, Scottish cheese and oat cakes and some shortbread!

We listened to music, learned the Canadian barn dance and made crafts all with a Scottish theme. Sadly we were so busy having fun we forgot to take any pictures!

To end our party though Primary 7 came down to share some of their Burns Supper with us. We were amazed at their talent, it was a perfect end to the Scottish party.

We listened to Auld Lang Syne on the flute.

Planting Flumflum Trees

During open day Primary 1 planted mystery bulbs to try and grow their own Flumflum tree similar to thr story we had been reading ‘Jack and the Flumflum tree’.

We have been taking care of them in the classroom, watering them and watching them grow but it was time to plant them outside.

First we had to weed the old planters and add new compost.

We then found a new bug hotel and a few bird houses. We had to be very quiet to not disturb any of the wild life.

Space

We have been learning about Space in Primary 1.

Today we have been talking about the planets in our Solar System. Some of our class decided to  recreate the planets orbiting the sun.

The Three Little Pigs

We have been enjoying reading different fairy tales in Primary 1 recently, the latest is The Three Little Pigs.

The children all discussed their favourite part of the story, they wrote sentences and drew pictures about it. They then used clay, straw and beans to build their own house just like The 3 Little Pigs.

Such great focus and concentration.

Really imaginative and individual houses.

They did an amazing job and were very proud of their creations!

Colour Mixing

Using  paint ice cubes children investigated mixing different colours.

Children then used this knowledge of colour mixing to create an umbrella.

They chose two colours to paint their unberella then mixed them together to create a third colour.

We then talked about warm and cold colours. Everyone had great reasons for why they might be referred to being a hot or cold colour;

‘orange is like fire and that’s hot’

’yellow would be warm because it’s like the sun’

‘blue would be cold because it’s the same as cold sea water’

’white is cold like the snow’

Literacy

Playing pairs when practising our story book words.

Lots of letter formation activities.

Spiderman broke into our classroom and captured the sound toys. We had to rescue them and sort them out into the correct boxes.

S is for sunflower.

Using the paint bags to practise letter formation.
