Halloween STEM challenge

This week we enthusiastically took part in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) challenge. Pupils were challenged to build a bone bridge using cotton buds, lollipop sticks, pegs, tape, string and pipe cleaners. The bridge had to hold the weight of our class spider, stand alone and be longer than 5cm. We spent all afternoon sketching out plans and building. We had so much fun whilst developing life skills such as problem solving and teamwork.

Place Value Palace

In Numeracy, we have exploring numbers and their value. We built our own place value palace using base ten materials. We then skip counted in 1s, 10s, 100s and 1000s to work out it’s value. Here are some pictures below.

The Human Heart

Primary 4 continue to explore the human body and have been learning about the heart. We discovered that the heart is responsible for pumping blood around the body to every cell. Blood travels from the heart to the lungs, where it is oxygenated, then travels back to the heart to be pumped around the body. Blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart are called arteries and mainly carry oxygenated blood. Those returning to the heart are called veins and mainly carry carbon dioxide back to the lungs.

Here are our heart models that we made using play dough.

These 3 bottles which each hold 2l represent the average amount of blood in an adult human.

Art and Design

Minecraft is very popular amongst our class so these Minecraft selfies were a huge hit. We combined maths and art, pupils had to count out squares to ensure their face was symmetrical. They were challenged to only use straight lines. The selfies are fantastic, well done Primary 4, very proud teacher here! 🌟

The Human Body

In Science, we have been learning about the human body. First we looked at the skeleton and pupils shared any information they already knew. We used videos and books in the library to learn the name of bones. Some of the names are tricky and there are lots to learn so we are going to keep practising them. Check out some of our skeleton learning below.

We were challenged to put bones together to make a skeleton and write some reasons why are skeleton is important.

In pairs or small groups, the boys and girls drew round one another with chalk and added lines and shapes to create a skeleton.

Travis drew a skeleton on his whiteboard, great job!

Back to School

Hello everyone and welcome to Primary 4’s class blog where we will share pictures of all the wonderful learning we get up to. Primary 4 have settled in well over the last few weeks and we are very proud of all them.

Some important information:

Our PE day is a Friday.

Homework will be issued on a Monday and due on a Friday.

Mrs Burnett will be with Primary 4 on a Monday, Tuesday and alternate Wednesdays. Mrs Kane will be in class alternate Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

We have been learning about our rights in class and worked in pairs to select the six rights that we feel are most important for our Class Charter.

Adults should do what’s best for you – Article 3

You have the right to an opinion and for it to be taken seriously – Article 12

You have the right to find out things and say what you think – Article 13

You have the right to choose your own friends and join in or set up groups – Article 15

You have the right to a good quality education – Article 28

You have the right to play and relax – Article 31

Next, we identified what adults and children can do to make sure we can enjoy these rights. Some suggestions were, Emily – be kind and let others join in, Abi – if you see someone left out in the playground ask them if they want to join in. Emilia – Treat others how you want to be treated. Harris- don’t talk over others and our teacher should give us the chance to talk and listen. Travis- adults in the playground should help us if someone is hurt or if someone is doing something they shouldn’t.

We voted and picked the theme of gaming to display these rights as, “we are in control of our rights!”
