World Book Day 📚

From ‘Getting Caught Reading’, to sharing books with P2 friends and Primary 7 pupils to dressing up and designing new hats for The Cat in the Hat we’ve all had a fantastic time celebrating World Book Day 📚👍

Open Afternoon

Thank you to all our visitors who came along to support us on Tuesday afternoon.  We used our amazing imaginative writing plans, that you helped us with, to write our own fairy tale on Wednesday as it was National Fairy Tale Day 🧚‍♀️📝 🐉 🤴 🌟

January

January has been a very busy month! We started  the new year with a design challenge. Working with a partner we were able to fulfill a design brief.

We love reading and hearing stories so when we brought in our favourite books we enjoyed sharing them with our friends.

In Mathematics and Numeracy we have been learning about tens and units and money. We enjoy playing in our class shop!

We’ve been watching the construction of Cross Arthurlie Nursery with great interest and we were very excited to see the walls finally going inside. 🔨  🚧

While outside we also went on a nature hunt. We were looking for objects that we could take inside and print with. We made beautiful butterflies, flowers, a Stickman, a Gruffalo, a shark and much more…

We’ve also been developing our balancing, jumping and rolling skills through gymnastics in the Gym Hall.

Robert Burns

Last week we learned a lot about Robert Burns and how we celebrate his life. We have been listening to information, taking notes and using our notes to create a Factfile about Burns. We’ve also read some of his poems, used our mapping skills to locate Alloway on a map of Scotland, learned Auld Lang Syne, had fun learning Scottish dances, designed our own tartan and made tasty Cock-a-Leekie soup.

December – part 2

Last week we all took part in our fabulous nativity performance of Prickly Hay.  We hope that all our family and friends enjoyed it.

On Monday we made our family a special Christmas card.

On Wednesday we had so much fun at our Christmas party. There was lots of dancing, party games and a very special visitor.

Today we had a design challenge to complete. Santa’s sleigh had broken down and we had to build him a new one. We could choose any construction material to build with and it had to have a seat for Santa and carry two presents. We chose to work independently, with a partner or in a trio. We were all successful in the challenge and had lots of fun testing our models along the way. Merry Christmas everyone xx🎄🎅🏻🎁

December – part 1

We have completed our Local Area topic by building a 3D model of our Barrhead walk. We had to work together to plan, build and paint a section of the walk. We have really enjoyed small world role play using our model.

In Maths we’ve been learning about greater than >, less than < and equals = symbols. We know that the alligator always likes to eat the biggest number but stands in the middle as an equals sign if two numbers are the same.

We have also been working on showing and telling the the time in o’clock and half pasts.

Finally we have been learning to measure accurately using a ruler, metre stick and measuring tape. We have been making estimations, measuring accurately and then verbally comparing them.

November

At the start of November we planted bulbs in memory of Mirin. We worked with Primary 2/2 to dig holes in the ground, plant the bulbs and cover them over. We look forward to seeing all the bulbs flowering in spring time. 🌷

In Science we have been learning about living and non-living things. We held up our living and non-living cards to state what we thought each thing was. Then we had lots of fun outside hunting for living things and using tally marks to collect and record information.

We continue to work hard on our spelling using lots of different active spelling resources.

In Maths we are learning about numbers to 100. We have been learning about place value of tens and units. We are also working hard on addition and subtraction within 12. We can link facts and solve missing number calculations.

Finally we have had lots of discussions around hygiene. After sneezing, coughing or going to the toilet we must wash our hands so we don’t spread germs. It’s important to brush our teeth at least twice a day for two minutes and we always wash our hands before eating snack and lunch. Mrs Brown hopes we all stay healthy through the winter season.

October

We have been planning, building and constructing throughout October. After our visit from the nursery architect we drew our own perfect nursery plans.

We have used different materials for building and constructing our own models.

Through our Author of the Month, we have enjoyed listening, predicting, reading and completing a range of tasks based on Julia Donaldson this month.

During Open Afternoon we listened to What the Ladybird Heard. Then we used a design brief to plan our own farmyard.

We all really enjoyed our local walk and were able to identify lots of different features on a map. After our walk we were able to extend our maps and include features that we had seen.

Before writing an Autumn poem we took a stroll around the school grounds looking for signs of Autumn. We used our senses to describe what we had seen.

Maths week

Today we had a visit from Katrina, the architect working on our new nursery building. She explained how she uses maths in her work. We learned lots about measuring and having to draw the plans on a smaller scale rather than real life size.  Katrina also showed us old and up to date maps of Barrhead, this linked to our current topic Our Community in which we’ve been looking at streets, buildings and our own homes around Barrhead.

Yesterday we created our own buildings. We used shaving foam to cement our bricks together.

Tomorrow we are going to plan and design our own dream nursery floor plan. Look out for our plans 👀
