P3: Symmetry 🦋🕍🚖

On Fridays in Maths we focus on Numeracy. Numeracy is a set of maths skills that you might use in everyday life.  More importantly, we focus on practising the ability to relate the skills we learn to real life (measure, time, symmetry, money and data). This week we learned how to identify symmetry.

We learned how to recognise symmetry; check our working using a mirror, and draw a line (or lines) of symmetry.  We started by looking at images of things in the real world that have symmetry. We explored symmetry in artwork, buildings, nature, animals and religion. We then used the smart-board to create digital symmetrical patterns to demonstrate clearly that symmetry is not a repeated  pattern but an exact mirror image.

We worked through various tasks to practise identifying symmetry and creating symmetrical images and patterns. Now that we have a secure understanding, next week we will work through more challenging and thought provoking learning activities which reiterate symmetry in the real world further.

Can you spot any symmetry when you’re out and about?! Let me know if you do! 👀🔍🐞
