Christmas Celebrations πŸŽ„πŸŽ…πŸŽ

We have been enjoying lots of fun Winter-themed assessments in the last week of school before the Christmas holidays. We have been playing relaxing festive music as we work all week.

Our Christmas party was so much fun and we all looked so smart. We were so happy to celebrate and play games together, like pin the nose on the reindeer and four corners.

As well as working hard, we celebrated a well-earned achievement together as we filled our pom pom jar to the very top! We have been working very hard since August earning pom poms for excellent work, insightful answers and exemplary behaviour.Β  The class voted toΒ  have a movie afternoon and we transformed the classroom into a cosy cinema with tickets and a snack bar.Β  Well done for all your hard work P5. πŸ‘

Snowy, our class polar bear, was excited for our well-earned movie afternoon!

Tickets please!

We loved our Christmas movie. πŸŽ…πŸ€Ά We’re feeling very festive!

Merry Christmas and a happy new year to all our families. β€πŸŽ„

Icy Day in School

The third of December brought a thick layer ice and we couldn’t stop thinking about it when we got into class. We finished our planned morning maths lesson early and discussed ideas for an outdoor maths lesson involving the ice!

We decided to estimate then measure the distance different weights would slide across the ice, similar to curling. We would measure the distance carefully with a trundle wheel. Would a heavier weight go further? Will the trundle wheel work on the ice? What other equipment could we use instead?Β  How do we ensure fair testing?Β

We developed the lesson by designing key questions and creating a risk assessment for working on the ice. Soon, we were all wrapped up and outside enjoying the clear cold ice!

Well done Primary 5, leading your own learning!Β

S.T.E.M Castles and Bridges

We have been studying a variety of building techniques and tools. We have also been exploring properties of different materials and applying this knowledge in our designs.

We have taken part in a weekly S.T.E.M (Science, Technologies, Engineering and Mathematics) Challenges to apply our maths and design skills. We have tried to build the tallest turret, a free standing castle wall and the strongest bridge. We built a model castle to showcase our learning, using a variety of attachment techniques and accurate measuring using a ruler.

Halloween 2020 πŸ‘»πŸ§™πŸΌβ€β™€οΈπŸŽƒ

Since Halloween looked a lot different this year, we had the best day celebrating in school. πŸ¦‡

After reading our handwritten spooky storiesΒ in the morning, we read a Halloween picture book story by David Walliams.Β  We then read and translated a frightful French poem! We read the poem in French and tried to spot words we recognised or ‘les mots transparent’ – words in French that look like English.Β  We are gaining a lot more confidence when reading and translating French.
Later we built pop-up Halloween cards by listening carefully and following a series of instructions. We wrote thoughtful messages for our family in them. The children were commenting on how grateful they were for all the fun little things their families had planned for them over Halloween weekend, from watching movies to looking for sweeties around the house.

In the afternoon we finished our cards whilst watching Coco (a firm favourite in our class) in the background. Miss Hamilton set up Halloween games around the classroom for us to visit.

We played Ten Pin Boo-ling and tried to knock over the ghosts! We had so much fun!

We went ‘dooking’ for apples and really enjoyed eating them! Some of us were having too much fun playing and eating to stop for a photo! πŸ˜…

Since we wouldn’t be able to go Trick or Treating around the doors this year, we recorded our Halloween jokes on a Flipgrid to share with our classmates. The best joke won a prize! You can check out our jokes on our Google Classroom.

To finish, we made some ‘potions’ drinks. Some had wiggly worms and teeth floating in them! We collected some Halloween sweeties out the pumpkin as we went by.

We had so much fun together. It was so lovely to see lots of smiles and laughter.Β  We hope you all had a happy Halloween. πŸŽƒπŸ‘»πŸ§™πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

Back to School πŸŽπŸ“š

Our first week of school was filled with lots of fun, outdoor learning, health and well-being and expressive arts. We familiarised ourselves with lots of new routines, including a new start time and lots of hand washing! We also just enjoyed being back in a school environment with our friends.

Tangrams

Maths About Me

We explored the Maths that would be used to describe ourselves by answering questions such as:

  • How many days have you been alive?

  • What height are you?

  • How many legs are in your family?

We had lots of fun using practical Maths and seeing if we had any similarities or differences with our classmates.

Outdoor Learning

We have an amazing outdoor space at Cross Arthurlie and we have embraced it during the good weather. We learned more about our teacher through a scavenger hunt where we had to find hidden wood slices. We also completed in a S.T.E.M challenge to build the best catapult from limited resources. We could use as many natural resources as we liked. At the end of the challenge, we lined up and tested them all in a competition. Every catapult worked amazingly!
