The third of December brought a thick layer ice and we couldn’t stop thinking about it when we got into class. We finished our planned morning maths lesson early and discussed ideas for an outdoor maths lesson involving the ice!
We decided to estimate then measure the distance different weights would slide across the ice, similar to curling. We would measure the distance carefully with a trundle wheel. Would a heavier weight go further? Will the trundle wheel work on the ice? What other equipment could we use instead? How do we ensure fair testing?
We developed the lesson by designing key questions and creating a risk assessment for working on the ice. Soon, we were all wrapped up and outside enjoying the clear cold ice!
