Maths and PE

During maths week we played a card relay race, we had to recognise the different suits in the pack of cards and order them correctly from smallest to largest.

We used our speed and stamina to compete against our classmates to run the quickest to complete our suit.

Nutrition

We have been learning about different nutritional needs. We researched different needs such as allergies and religions, who can only eat certain foods. We planned meals for particular individuals.

We focussed on how much sugar we eat and used the Change4Life Food Scanner app to identify how many sugar cubes are in each item we eat. We learned children are only allowed 6 sugar cubes each day but there is lots of ‘hidden’ sugar in items we thought were healthy like yoghurts and breakfast cereals. We know we can make smart swaps to ensure we are keeping our bodies healthy.

Art & Design

We have been learning a new art technique –  Japanese Suminagashi – paper marbling. The word Suminagashi translates to ‘floating ink.’ We mixed a range of inks with water to create our own marbling designs.

Look at the smiles and amazement on our faces as the colours swirled around and then the ink transferred onto our paper. We can’t wait to use these as a backdrop on our ‘Work that makes us feel proud’ wall.

Spreading our Wings after Lockdown 💛

We read the story ‘Ahmed and the Feather Girl’ about a special little girl who was set free by her new friend. We thought about our recent experience of lockdown and related this to the UNCRC Rights of the Child.

We then learned a variety of different watercolour techniques that we used to create a unique colourful feather.

The next day we arrived at school to find all our feathers had joined together to make one big set of wings! We are so happy we can finally spread our wings after lockdown and spend some quality time together in school. 💛🌈

👨‍🔬 Science Topic Materials 👨‍🔬

This is the Experience and Outcome we will be working on for a little while.
SCN 1-15a
Through exploring properties and sources of materials, I can choose appropriate materials to solve practical challenges.

By the end of this topic we should be able to explain the following.
Know that natural materials come from the Earth.
Understand that artificial (synthetic) materials are man-made
Be able to identify and classify a number of common materials as either natural or artificial.

⭐(Teaching Point)⭐
Natural materials, also known as raw materials, are those that come from the Earth. These include air, water, living things (plants and animals), rocks, some metals and fossil fuels. Some natural materials are used by humans in their original form, whereas some are treated, processed and manufactured to change how they look.
Artificial, or synthetic, materials are man-made by mixing or reacting natural materials to change their properties.

⭐First task Primary 4.⭐
I would like you to follow the link bellow and create a colourful mind map of all the artificial materials you can see around your house and a second mind map of all the natural materials you can see around your home.
