Digital Escape Room

During Maths Week Scotland we decided to put our technology skills and mathematics skills to the test. We navigated around an online escape room using our critical thinking 🤔 strategies to solve literacy, jigsaw 🧩 and numeracy problems.  We worked as a team but unfortunately only managed to escape from the first room before the time was up! We will work continue to  work on our skills.

Skeleton

Over the last few weeks we have been investigating the skeletal system and trying to name the main bones.  We discovered that babies are born with 300 bones and as we get older we have about 200 bones. We also found out the smallest bone is in your ear and the largest bone is in your leg.  Using large foam bones  we tried to create or own skeletons. The VR headsets allowed us to take a close look at each main bone and the function  it has in allowing us to stand or protect the main organs of the human body.

Picasso

We decided to investigate the artistic movement of Cubism and focused on the artists Pablo Picasso. Born in 1881 in Spain he had 23 words in his name.  He started to paint at the age of 7 and at the age of 9 he completed his first painting called Le Picador.  We investigate a selection of Picasso’s famous head images and discussed how they made us feel.  We then tried to create head images in his artistic style.

Equivalent Fractions

We have been learning about  fractions and working out equivalent fractions using a big selection of resources. We can identify the denominator as the bottom part of the fraction and the numerator as the top number. In a fraction, the denominator represents the number of equal parts in a whole, and the numerator represents how many parts are being considered.

We had a go at at simplifying fractions by dividing the numerator and denominator by the same number.

Escape Room

On Wednesday we had to use our problem solving strategies and teamwork to escape the classroom. The building had been taken over by aliens from planet 🧠 Brainlara. They wanted to study how our brain functions when solving problems. Together we decoded  a hidden message to escape just in time for lunch.

2D Shapes

Using a variety of different learning styles we have explored the properties of 2D shapes. We investigated angles, sides, lines of symmetry and corners (vertices).

We enjoyed making 2D shapes with straws and toothpicks. We also worked on our tilling skills using shapes and a selection of apps on our google classroom.  Our knowledge of 2D shapes was tested in Kahoot quiz.

🎲Probability 🎲

We have been learning about probability over the last few weeks. We know that probability is the likelihood or chance of an event occurring.  After some fun games we understood the probability line and can now  use vocabulary such as impossible, unlikely, even chance, likely and certain.

We investigated the probability of finding different coloured smarties and different combinations of chew sweets.

We worked hard on our ability to make reasonable predictions  as this skill will be important when we are making decision in the future.

Some of our lessons involved making a probability area model and using it to find probabilities of events.  This helped to develop a strong conceptual understanding of probability.
