Snowmen in the Moonlight

We have been working on techniques to add light and shadow to our art work to create depth, dimension and visual interest to make our designs more life-like.
We have highlighted where the moon shines the brightest on our snowmen and added core shadow at the darkest points of our snowmen (and snow women). We also added the cast shadow which the snowmen created on the surface of the snow.

Astronomy – The Stars

Using pieces of re-claimed timber that we painted dark blue, we recreated some of the constellations that we have been learning about. Using our creative skills and following strict health and safety guidelines we used a hammer and nails, a screwdriver, an electric drill and screws.

Abominable Snowman Challenge

As we move into more wintery weather, we were set the challenge of creating a cave for the Abominable Snowman.  We had limited resources to do this:  mini marshmallows, cocktail sticks and a paper cup.

We had to plan and create our design, focusing on how to make a strong and stable structure.  Each group did this slightly differently, but all did this successfully!  We discussed this as a class and agreed that structures that used triangular shapes with more connections, seemed to be the strongest.

Hopefully, now the Abominable Snowman has a cave to live in, he will stay there for the rest of the winter!

The Solar System – Eight Phases of the Moon

We have been learning about features of the solar system and making models of the planets. During drama we made a ‘human’ solar system to show our understanding of how Earth rotates on an invisible axis around the sun, how it takes 365 days, 5 hours, 59 minutes and 16 seconds or 1 year to completely revolve. We also learned  how we get different seasons.

Another interesting fact we discovered is that the moon is completely dark and that ‘moonlight’ is actually the sun’s reflection.

Poppy Scotland

We have been learning about the work of the Poppy Scotland charity.  This week there were poppies on sale in school.  Unfortunately we were able to go round classes with the collection tins, but we had several tins placed around the school, so children could make donations safely.  We hope the money we raise will help the charity.

In class, we watched video clips from Poppy Scotland, made notes and organised our notes into posters and decorative poppies.  We made wreaths from tissue paper and created poppy artwork using chalk and charcoal.

We learned about the poem In Flanders Fields and we are going to be writing our own remembrance poems.

We hope you like our classroom display – we even made the letters for it ourselves.  If you look closely at the bottom, you can see little wooden crosses.

Happy Hallowe’en

In maths, Primary 6 can illustrate the lines of symmetry for a range of 2D shapes and created these ‘spooky spider webs’ using orange and black wool and sticks that we collected from outdoors.

Roald Dahl Week

During Roald Dahl week there was an unfortunate incident which took place in the playground, involving a little boy called Charlie Bucket. The children created their own questions and interviewed  witnesses to the incident. From their notes taken during interviews, they were then able to distinguish the facts from opinions which they will now use to write up a full report.

Pictures: Charlie waiting for the police and an ambulance to arrive. Can you spot any clues?

*Note: Charlie is now home and safe with his mum and dad, Grandpa  Joe, Grandma Josephine, Grandpa George and Grandma Georgina. He has made a full recovery.

The police released a statement asking for any witnesses to the incident to please contact Cross Arthurlie Primary School.
