Jumping into summer!

We had an enjoyable day yesterday celebrating the end of term with a fun trip to Flip Out in Rutherglen. We loved jumping around on all the different trampolines and platforms, sliding down the inflatables and even doing cool flips and cartwheels across the trampolines. We had the whole place to ourselves which made it even better! One of our favourite parts of the trampoline park was ‘Wipe Out’ and the ‘Climb Wall.’

When we returned back to school we had a picnic on our grassy hill. The weather was beautiful. In the afternoon we played rounders and had an ice pole to cool us down. We wish every Monday could be like this!

Bath Bomb Experiment

Another experiment we carried out as part of our chemical reactions topic, was creating bath bombs. This experiment was not as simple as creating lava lamps. It required more ingredients and a tricker method. We were so focused on following the instructions correctly that we forgot to take pictures of the process. A few days after the experiment, we tried and tested our bath bombs in water. To our surprise, they all worked very well leaving a lovely lavender smell and creating bubbles of gas and a fizzing sound as they dissolved in the water.

Lava Lamp Experiment

As part of our chemical reactions topic in Science we created our very own lava lamps. Before beginning the experiment, we discussed the equipment needed, our predictions and the method for the experiment. We recorded this information on our science investigation sheets and then split into groups to begin. Below are the steps we followed.

  1. Fill up 2/3 of a plastic bottle with vegetable oil.
  2. Add 1/3 of water until the bottle is filled up to the top.
  3. Add 5-10 drops of food colouring.
  4. Break up 1 alka-seltzer tablet into smaller pieces.
  5. Add 1 piece of the tablet to the bottle and look out for a reaction.

The tablet reacts with the water and oil mixture to create huge bubbles and a fizzing sound. We were definitely fascinated by this experiment.

Have a look at some pictures from our experiment below.

Our Class Assembly

We loved sharing our learning about Victorian children and their school and work life during our class assembly last week. We enjoyed dressing as Victorian children and our favourite part was singing ‘It’s a hard knock life.’ Thank you to all our family members who came to watch our assembly. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

Scotland Street Museum

We visited Scotland Street Museum for a Victorian classroom re-enactment.

When we arrived the boys and girls were taken to seperate changing rooms where we had to change into Victorian uniform. The uniform was quite different compared to what we wear today. We lined up outside the classroom and waited patiently for the Victorian teacher. She was just as we had imagined; extremely strict and scary looking. The classroom was dull with little colour and a blackboard. Throughout the morning we took part in times table recall, problem solving questions using a slate, copperplate writing using ink, drill, prayers and other activities. At the end we got to see examples of how children were punished either by wearing a dunce’s hat or using a cane.

Having visited this Victorian classroom and worked with a Victorian teacher, we are so glad we did not need to attend school during the Victorian era. The experience was pretty terrifying to say the least! We are sad that our Victorian’s topic has come to and end, we loved learning about all the different aspects of the Victorian era and comparing them to modern life.

We are however, looking forward to our upcoming Victorians class assembly.

Have a look at some of the pictures from our trip.

Easter Fun

In the lead up to Easter we have taken part in a number of Easter activities including literacy and maths challenges. Our favourite was the Easter egg challenge.  We enjoyed using paint, tissue paper, cardboard and other materials to design hard boiled eggs for our egg competition. It was much tricker to do than it seems. Miss Aslam struggled to pick a winner for the competition as everyone’s eggs were designed so creatively. As a class we voted on the best egg. Well done to Millie, our runner up, who designed an adorable Minnie Mouse egg and Emily, who came first place with her angel egg. Happy Easter everyone!

Victorian Inventions

As part of our Victorians topic, we have been looking at many famous inventions and inventors. Over the last few weeks we were given the task to become inventors and create our very own invention.

A Dragons Den styled lesson took place in which we had to present and promote our invention. We had to think carefully about our invention, its purpose and whether it solved any modern day problems. We used loud and clear voices and made eye contact with the audience.

Once we finished presenting, we had to answer a range of challenging questions from the judges and audience. Some people wrote feedback slips for each inventor and gave them a star rating.

We throughly enjoyed trying to win over the Dragons with our inventions. Have a look at our creative inventions below.

Edinburgh Zoo Trip

We had a fabulous day at Edinburgh Zoo today. After a smooth coach journey to Edinburgh, we arrived at the zoo and had a snack. We visited the penguin rock first and loved watching the penguins dive into the water. We walked through the zoo and managed to see lots of animals, including a very sleepy giant panda! We went to the chimpanzee indoor house where we had lunch whilst listening to the chimpanzees screech. After lunch we had a session in the Confucius classroom. We learned interesting facts about China and got to show off our Mandarin skills too. For the rest of the day we continued to walk around the zoo and look out for lots of animals including lions and rhinos. Thankfully there was no rain so we stayed dry. Overall, we had a fun filled day at the zoo. Check out some of our pictures below.

Shrove Tuesday

Today we learned about Shrove Tuesday. Shrove Tuesday is also known as Pancake Day. It is the last day before Lent begins. This is the Christian period leading up to Easter, when people often give up something.

We took part in a quiz to test how well we remembered how other countries around the world celebrate Pancake day and some of the traditions they follow.

In numeracy we worked in groups to solve a ‘Pancake Pincher Mystery.’ We had to solve the clues to figure out who took a bite from each pancake during Peter’s party at the Pancake Pantry. We then solved pancake  menu challenges and coloured in pancakes according to fractions.

Our favourite part was when we got to eat pancakes! We chose either chocolate spread or strawberry jam as our topping and enjoyed eating the pancakes whilst working through our pancake maths challenges. We wish we could have pancakes during every maths lesson!
