Whitecraigs Rugby Taster 🏉

P7.2 were excited to welcome Whitecraigs Rugby Club to Cross Arthurlie for a taster session. A few pupils had experience of playing rugby but by the end of the session, many more were fans of the sport! A great afternoon of competitive sport.

Lord Provost Debate 🗳

Primary 7.2 visited Eastwood Park to participate in the Lord Provost Debate. After much discussion, the children agreed that they would like to focus on an issue facing our community rather than just P7. They decided on the following motion: The House believes that households should only own one car.

Pupils researched the issue to discover the main arguments for and against the motion. We explored the difference between fact and opinion and the reliability of sources. We also recognised the importance of citing our sources to back our points. As part of our preparation for the debate, we held a mock debate in class.

The debate was a huge success with all pupils participating to a high standard. We all demonstrated and understood the importance of respecting the views of others whilst having the freedom to share  our own opinion. The Lord Provost commented that it was one of the most interesting debates he has listened to recently since there were so many good points given from both sides.

The debate concluded with a summary from our dedicated media teams and team leaders. It’s was a very close vote with the house voting 14:12 against households being restricted to one car.

Well done to everyone for all their hard work and dedication today. A credit to our school.

Pupil Choice Homework: Decimal Maths Games 🧮

.The pupils were given the opportunity to design their own maths games to reflect all their learning with fractions and decimals. We had a lot of fun on our last day before the February weekend playing each other’s games and consolidating our skills.

A great effort from everyone. We are all feeling much more confident with our fractions, decimals and percentages.

Baking Gingerbread Men 🍪

Primary 7.2  expressed an interest in baking something for themselves, similar to Home Ec in high school.  They chose gingerbread men because ’tis the season!’

Each group had to follow a recipe, collect and measure the correct ingredients and help to create perfect dough through kneading. Once their dough was ready, each child took a portion of dough to create their own Gingerbread Christmas decoration using a range of cutters.

We had so much fun making them and they smelled so good, we couldn’t resist having s little bite before break…for quality control!

Our ovens are warm and the equipment is set…let the bake off begin!

Lots of numeracy skills in use – accurate measuring and using scales.

Mix mix mix! More hands make light work!

Our gingerbread decorations before they were iced and eaten!

P7 Christmas Party 🎄🎉

Primary 7.2 looked lovely at their Christmas party! We played lots of games and danced the afternoon away. Merry Christmas P7.2!

💙

Thank you Ava for our lovely cake! 🍰

Well done Armanj for winning our Four Corners game! 🎉

It’s hard having tall pals!

Crackers, snacks and some rubbish Christmas jokes have got us feeling so Christmassy! Merry Christmas to a lovely class! 🎄🎅🎁

P7.2 Leading Learning

P7.2 have been exploring the variety of ways data can be displayed and how, at times, data can be misleading. Working together with friends and discussing our thought process has helped us to feel more confident when drawing conclusions from a range of graphs.

We discussed how data handling could be applied in real life, taking on roles in different careers and acting them out. [TV companies, business managers, medical scientists, advertising companies]

At the end of the week, each group selected a misleading graph and created a presentation to the class explaining how it was misleading and how it could be improved. All children were confident in this skill and enjoyed collaborating on their nRich Maths Challenge. Well done to all of those who managed to solve it.

Chinese Tea Party 🇨🇳☕️

Primary 7 learned all about Chinese culture today with Miss Wang. We now know that there are 6 different types of tea regularly enjoyed by Chinese people. Also, a Chinese tea set will always have 6 tea cups because 6 is a lucky number in Chinese culture. We tasted some lovely green tea all the way from Taiwan!

Exploring Scale in Mathematics 🌍

P7.2 have been exploring scale and how it used in real life. We created 3D models from scale drawings and reduced simple objects to scale drawings in our jotters .

We applied what we had learned by using scales on maps to discover how big our local area, city and country actually is. We went ‘travelling’ to areas of our choice to work out how far away they were.

We have explored scale on a variety of maps. To challenge ourselves, we used a more complex scale on an Ordnance survey map. We worked out how far landmarks in Glasgow were from where we lived. For example, how far away the SSE Hydro was from our house.

Make Do and Mend workshop with MEND

MEND are a small business operating in Glasgow’s City Centre and East End. They offer free workshops to teach individuals vital life skills in sewing and clothes repairs. Primary 7.2 had been learning all about Britain’s efforts during WW2. Daily life was difficult with a lack of resources and we learned all about the rationing of clothes as well as food.

We soon realised that the yearly allowance of 66 coupons (72 for children) would not cover even a fraction of our current wardrobes. We discussed the global problem of ‘fast fashion’ which is fast becoming one of the worlds largest polluters and causes of global warming.

To improve our sewing skills that we could apply in our own life, we invited MEND to hold a workshop in our class. We learned classic stitches such as hand stitch and back stitch. We used these to sew a triangle patch that would be used to make bunting. This bunting will be displayed in our class to mark the end of our WW2 topic.

Thanks again to MEND for the wonderful experience.

Mandarin with Miss Wang 🇨🇳

Primary 7.2 have started this years study of Mandarin with our new Mandarin teacher Miss Wang. To celebrate, we made little origami pandas. With lots of complex folds and cutting, these pandas offered a good challenge but we worked hard and helped one another. 🐼
