Bowling taster

We had a special visit from  Shanks Bowling Club Barrhead.  We got our first taster with tips on how to play bowls.  All of us really enjoyed it and we are looking forward to our visit to Shanks Bowling Club in the summer!

Victorian Toys

Primary 6/2 spent the afternoon investigating and exploring Victorian toys.  We then reported on our findings.  Favourites including the skipping ropes, china dolls, toy soldiers, board games and meccano.

World Book Day

Primary 6 took part in World Book day.  We dressed up as a character from a book or a novel themed outfit.  All of us had the opportunity to attend a book reading.  We had lots to choose from including Harry Potter, Awful Auntie by David Walliams, Tom Gates Super Good Sillks  and Fantastic Mr Fox.

We also spent time on our novel study – Friend or Foe by Michael Morpurgo.  Today we learned to identify how an author creates a sense of danger and excitement. We all managed to find evidence in the book!

Finally we listened to a Teacher’s Tales of Terror………..

Have a look at our outfits – Who can you spot?

Open Afternoon

Primary 6/2 have had a wonderful afternoon welcoming all of our visitors and showing them our learning.  We enjoyed creating Victorian masquerade ball masks using different collage materials.  Some of the adults even joined in!

ICT Coding

This week in Primary 6 we have started a sequence of lessons on coding.

Coding is what makes it possible for us to create computer software, apps and websites.  It is a set of instructions that computers can understand.  We thought it was helpful to think about code as a recipe.

Lucy  and Kyden – Coding was really fun but I thought some levels were really challenging!

Lily – I feel this is a useful tool for designing apps.

Freya – I didn’t know what coding was but now I know I am really interested in it.

Lachlan – I used to think coding was boring but now I am really excited about it!

The Victorians

In class today we have been learning about life as a Victorian child.  We listened and made notes about a girl called Martha who at 12 years old had to leave home to become a servant in a grand house. Some of us have chosen to write a journal based on life as a servant.

We also learned about how rich Victorians would have ‘chamber set’ in their bedroom, which would consist of a jug, basin, soap dish and powder pot.  We then created a washstand with our partner to display in class.

Victorians valued handmade gifts very highly especially those made by children.  One favourite was the hand-shaped pen wiper originally made from white card and black velvet.  There was always a motto stitched on the bottom.  We followed a set of instructions to create or own including the Victorian motto – ‘No hands should be idle.’

Health and Well Being- The Dangers of Smoking

Primary 6 had a visit from three nurses from Paisley University as part of our sequence of lessons on the dangers of smoking.  We were able to feedback to the nurses what we had learned and we showed the nurses our anti smoking leaflets that we had created in class.  At the end of the lesson we even got to join in a rap that one of the nurses had written for us! The nurses were very impressed with how much we knew about the dangers of smoking and presented us with a certificate.

The British Empire

Today in Primary 6 we have been learning about the British Empire. We had to work collaboratively to research countries of the Bristish Empire using the chrome books and then create giant flags.  Each group chose a different flag.

Victorian Homes

Our task was to research a Victorian home and design a suitable house for a wealthy Victorian.  We were able to draw a detailed plan or create a model.  We worked independently or with a partner. Our designs included the key features of a Victorian home, information about each room of the house and have appropriate living areas for both servants and the family members.

Today in Primary 6 we showed our designs to the other primary 6 class and presented our information.  We were all really impressed by each other’s designs and gave each other some great feedback!
