Today is the last day of primary school for our Primary 7 and I could not be more proud of my class. You have worked incredibly hard all year and you have been an absolute pleasure to teach. I really will miss you all!

I would like to say a massive thank you to all the parents for you support over the year – it means a great deal. You have all been so generous with your lovely cards, kind words and gifts. I would love to write every one of you a personalised thank you card … if only there was time on the last day! Again, thank you all so much.

Countdown to Leavers!

Every day, Primary 7.2 will receive a treat from Miss Hamilton as we count down the last 10 days of primary school! 😊😢🥳 Names are randomly selected from our lolly pop sticks. We’re having lots of fun making memories and reflecting over our 7 years at Cross Arthurlie. It’s an emotional but exciting time for our Cross Arthurlie staff, parents and Primary 7 pupils but we are know they are looking forward to fresh start at their new high school in August!

Primary 7 have been collecting nice memories and funny moments over the year in our memory jar. We finally smashed it today and had lots of fun reflecting back over the year.

Presents and keep sakes all round! We had one last celebration before we put on our Leavers show.

Apostrophes: possession by a plural noun

Primary 7.2 strengthened their understanding of apostrophes by exploring how they are used to show possession by the plural noun.

We went on a scavenger hunt to find grammatically correct sentences. We also corrected sentences that were written with the wrong use of an apostrophe.

We played games such as Lucky Dip on our board and Missing Words on the Chromebooks.

At the end of the lesson we had a quiz to check how confident we now felt with using apostrophes to show possession by a plural noun. Examples we gave were:

The boys’ cloakroom was empty. 

The children’s classroom remained bright. 

The mangoes’ flesh was soft. 

If the plural word ends in s already, the  just add an apostrophe.” 

“If the plural of the word doesn’t end in s, like children, then add ‘s. For example, children’s” 


Investigating Waves

Before we attended a Science and Maths day at Barrhead High School, we had a lesson investigating electromagnetic waves all around us. We were already familiar with a few, such as radio waves. Miss Hamilton set up activities and key questions to let the children explore how these waves work and how they can be used in life.

We had lots of fun and are feeling confident in identifying the wide range of waves prior to our High School Taster.

Science Day: Microorganisms 🔬

Primary 7.2 committed a whole day to Science on Thursday! 🤓 We were learning all about Microorganisms – tiny, living things that cannot be seen with the naked eye. We now know microorganisms can be grouped in 3 categorise  (virus, fungi and bacteria) regardless of whether they are helpful or harmful to humans.

We explored the ways they could be harmful, looking at what illnesses can be caused by microorganisms and how we can avoid becoming unwell.

We also looked at how microorganisms can be useful in providing us with the food we love such as cheese, yoghurt, mushrooms and bread!

We uses microscopes to explore what was living in the seemingly clear water collected from a stagnant pool. We discovered all sorts of creatures swimming around! At lunch time, a few pupils brought in items from the playground to look at in more detail. We could even see pollen on a flower in full detail!

We set up an experiment to demonstrate that these tiny microorganisms are in fact living. Our experiment activated yeast and placed a balloon over the  container. We kept a close eye on them in class and quickly after we could see the balloon starting to inflate!

By the end of the day, we all picked a key question to explore in more depth and teach the class. We had explored how water waste rids microorganisms when recycling. Other pupils taught us why some food rots before others and what benefits microorganisms can bring to every day life.

We now know how important microorganisms are to ever day life, even if we were a little grossed out by them initially! We absolutely loved exploring using the microscopes and disguising the impact of good hygiene on our life.

P7 Sponsored Run at Cowan Park 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🌳

Primary 7 have been fundraising ahead of their sponsored run. Pupil ran about a mile around Cowan Park. One of our quickest runners completed the lap in 6 minutes 36 seconds and everyone completed in at least 14 minutes – a fantastic achievement!

It was lovely to see everyone encouraging and supporting one another over the finish line. Well done on a fantastic run!

Easter Egg Decorating Competition 🏆🐥

P7 hold their annual Easter egg decorating competition in April and this year was BIGGER and BETTER than  ever! Our judges this year were Ms Webster, Ms Rice and Mrs MacLean. They had such a tough decision to make as all eateries were excellent but this years winner was Freya  with her Harry Potter design, complete with egg puns!🧙🏻‍♂️ 2nd place was Ashton with his amazingly detailed dinosaurs which the judges thought was a very original idea. 🦖🦕 Joint third were Sara and Lucy with their fluffy chicks 🐣 and Nicola and Abby with The Teletubbies.

We all had a great day and went outside to roll our designs down the big hill. Can you spot your design?

pH testing in Science

P7.2 have been learning about pH and how it can be used to express  the acidity or alkalinity of a solution on a scale. The pH scale is numerical where 7 is neutral, lower values are more acid and higher values more alkaline. Using pH paper we tested the pH of a variety of substances and chemicals, recording and ordering them according to the scale. We took litmus paper home and tested more everyday items, sharing what we learned through our Google Classroom. 

 

Maths Easter Escape Room 🏃‍♂️🔍

After the Easter holidays, Miss Hamilton and P7.2 decided to run an Escape Room to revise many Mathemtaics and Numeracy skills. Like every escape room, we had a tight time limit of 1 hour 10 minutes to solve the mystery of the contaminated chocolate! 🍫

We revised how to read Roman Numerals, measure angles accurately using a protractor, convert fractions, solve algebra and locate items in a four quadrant coordinate grid.

Each answer revealed a clue and the children had to think logically to find the next clue hidden in the classroom or corridor. To make it harder, each group had to keep their progress really quiet to not reveal where the clues were hidden. Poker faces needed!

Miss Hamilton was on hand to give a helpful hint  when needed. We all had lots of fun revised a lot of skills after a long restful holiday.






Our winners completed the challenge in 50:06 and  received 10 house points each. Every team received house points for taking part!

 

 

 

Robotics Challenge in partnership with Barrhead High School

Primary 7 have been studying the impact robotics can have in our lives and the future. To build upon this, pupils had the opportunity to build and program their own robots using Lego Mindstorm EV3 kits. Groups worked very well to build their robots, following sets of instructions and persisting when problem solving with design. Groups familiarised themselves with programming their robots in class over a fortnight.

Today, two ex-pupils who now attend Barrhead High and Mr Malloy from the school’s Science department visited Cross Arthurlie to set a series of Robotics challenges. Everyone worked excellently together and  managed to tackle all 3 challenges. Some groups even made it to the bonus challenge. Barrhead High were very impressed with our efforts.
