It\u2019s been a busy week so far in our Woodwork area! We have been very interested in where wood comes from, so we decided to have a wee look for some books that might tell us!

\n\u201clook it\u2019s trees. Wood comes from trees!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201dthat looks like the wood we have outside\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201dand it says paper is made from trees. So that\u2019s wood too. And pencils\u201d.<\/p>\n

We decided to go on a wood hunt to see what else was made of wood! Off we set with the iPad to see what we could find!
\n\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cLook the blocks are made of wood\u201d. \u201cSo is the door. And the table\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201dis this box made of wood?\u201d \u00a0\u201cI think so\u201d.<\/p>\n

Our families have very kindly donated lots of materials to our junk modelling area, so we decided to have a look through and sort out the materials we thought would be made from wood. \u00a0 We couldn\u2019t believe a Rice Krispies box came from a tree!<\/p>\n

We also had a look around our woodwork area and discovered we had lots of \u201cthings that are made of wood but look different\u201d. Wood shavings that \u201cwere curly and bouncy\u201d, sawdust \u201cmy mummy buys me sawdust for my horse. \u00a0It makes his bed all cozy when he\u2019s sleeping\u201d. \u00a0\u201cThe shopping back is made from trees. Look it has a picture of a wee tree on it!\u201d.

\nIt was time to get creative! Using cardboard tubes, paper, wood and of course lots and lots of glue, we produced some fabulous 3d models and artwork!
\n\"\"<\/a>
\n\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

There was lots of discussion about why trees are cut down to make wood and paper, which led to us deciding to make our own trees and Forest!
\n\"\"<\/a>
\nOf course we had to \u201cmake a giant tree so we can grow it on the wall\u201d.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

We proudly displayed our recycled wood and paper artwork in our woodwork area. \u00a0We are so lucky to have such talented children at Cart Mill!
\n\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cWood can provide endless opportunities for creative expression and developing design thinking. \u00a0There is something special about woodworks\u2019s ability to engage young children. \u00a0It is learning through doing\u201d. (Froebel Trust, 2023)<\/p>\n
