Floating boats!!

Today in the garden the children took part in a little experiment. Following on from our floating and sinking activities some of the children wanted to make boats to float. We made boats out of different materials. We used egg cartons and cupcake holders as our bases.

First the children decorated their own sails for the boats.

“Mine is a triangle!” ……..  “Mine is all yellow cause that’s my favourite colour!”

The children then decorated lollipop sticks each to attach their sails to their boats! They attached the sails to the lollipop sticks using blu tack.

“I’m pressing it hard!”

We then attached our sails to our boat bases. We made a cardboard one and a plastic one each!

We then tried to sail our boats in the water tray! We made great predictions.

”I think both my boats will sail!” …….  “This one will be faster!”

”I don’t want mine to sink!”

The children quickly noticed that the egg carton boats were all sinking whilst the plastic boats were all sailing. The cardboard boats were absorbing all the water whilst the plastic ones floated on the top of the water! We now know that if you put cardboard in water it will sink and get ruined!

”Ahhhh my boat is all floppy! ……. “Mine is super fast!”
